I'm redoing a 1964 runabout boat as my latest project as I move from small to larger and larger vessels (obviously I'm a boating newcomer with a 16 foot runabout). Installed new stringers, deck, seats, steering cables etc.

Found a 1999 50HP Johnson on Craig's List close to home. the guy had it on a bass boat bought new but soon learned NJ has a 25HP restriction on most lakes and he is a freshwater guy so he swapped the motor out.

The motor still has the paint on it where the starter teeth meet the flywheel so for 1500 its mine! (Everyone else wanted to see it running, one look at it and I KNOW it wasn't used much. Plus the guy was getting married and needed the cash). But my 1995 and newer wiring harness does not fit it. The Motor has one large Red plug for the connections at the head. The 1995+ wiring harness has three small plugs, a triangle, a square and a rectangle connection. I start googling and searching and email a guy form these forums. He tells me they switched over in 1995, so if I have a 1999 motor something is wrong. He shows me a picture of an adapter-but its the same type of female end thats on my motor....with the three shaped mail plugs like at the terminating end on the new harness.

So time to go reinvestigate the motor. I go out to the shed Saturday since its cold and dark when I get home this time of year. The Red plug wires go under a plastic cover. I remove it...and there they are-the three 1995 and newer "check engine " type of three plugs.

Luckily I was more happy than feeling like an idiot. I can't wait for spring because this looks like a plug and play!

Anyone have any "sat for 11 years" maintenance recomendations????

Impeller! that old and dry in the north temps could be dry rotted or cracked. 45 bux-ish. the plugs just cuz they are cheap. 2stk or 4 stk? 4 stk drain and refill oil. drain the lower unit oil and refill. if he ran the gas out of it then stored it there may not be much to do in the way of carb cleaning, I had a 74 Evenrude stored for 20 years and just added fuel and she ran great. if not remove and clean the carbs, float bowl at a minimum. attach power and a tank of gas hook up the muffs and cross your fingers. should be easy if it was not used much. a compression test always gives me piece of mind because you need the 3 basic things to make an motor run... compression, fuel/air, spark. the rest are secondary issues.

Re: Crazy Wiring

The engine sat for ten years but was not run much EVER. We are talking paint on propeller and no nicks. We are talking flywheel gears still with original paint in the gears and also on the starter pinion. Stored with no gas hooked up-I put in new plugs, squirted in some oil, spun propeller in neutral and put in new plugs. Started with muffs on it and it ran beautifully. The water dishcharge is also peeing beautifully. Tilt/trim up and down like it never sat. Wierd thing on motor broke on the left side-I think its a trim stop for the down motion. It was fragile as hell and snapped off.....

My question was about the oil tank hook up-I think I got my answer as the wiring color matches, its the only thing not used, and I found other oil tank pictures with the same type of plug on ebay. Thank you all for answering though. Look for pics in "completed projects"-the wetdown is SOON!!!!

I lucked out with the motor-50 HP for $1500. Unused the guy had a bass boat and wanted freshwater-law in NJ says 25 HP only so he swapped it out after only 5-6 uses!!!!

I'tll be "64 Duo"
