As the industry struggles, some CT lobstermen are now offering 'lobster charters'

It turns out that Escape is indeed a commercial lobster boat, but she is a charter boat, as well. The smartly dressed people I saw aboard were customers, along for the ride. The fading lobster industry on Long Island Sound has led some creative fishermen to seek harvest from other sources of income.

So, do they get their recreational limit of lobsters to take home?

Here's an interesting fact about lobsters.

In North America, the American lobster did not achieve popularity until the mid-19th century, when New Yorkers and Bostonians developed a taste for it; not until the invention of a special boat, the lobster smack, did a commercial fishery flourish.[19] Prior to this time, lobster was considered a mark of poverty or as a food for indentured servants or lower members of society in Maine, Massachusetts and the Canadian Maritimes, and servants specified in employment agreements that they would not eat lobster more than twice per week.[20] American lobster was initially deemed worthy only of being used as fertilizer or fish bait, and it was not until well into the twentieth century that it was viewed as more than a low-priced canned staple food.[21]

.. and another one.

At the time North America was receiving its first European settlers, lobsters were abundant, often washing up on shore to form piles up to two feet high. Since they were so plentiful and easy to harvest, lobsters were a frequent meal for poor families near the coast. The disdain for lobster slowly waned over the centuries, and the poor man's chicken soon became the rich man's prize.

You have not been able to make a good living off the water for quite sometime now. The crabbers have been doing the same thing down here for quite some time. Educational and history tours of the Chesapeake are being very popular as well. In the fall, "Blast (sea ducks) and Cast" (stripers) charters have been popular for decades.

No, ...not sure, but I think they get one.

There is a boat out of Norwalk however, that anchors in a cove afterwards and cooks up a lobster dinner for the guests.

A friend of mine has been doing lobster charters for the past five years and has been doing well for the summer season.
