Creative Modification for my OMC Ignition Module

I believe I have to replace the ignition module for my 1990 OMC 4.3LHO motor. And of course this part (#986296) is no longer available... anywhere!

Why can't I find another ignition module and install it? What was so special about this particular module that it's irreplacable?

I've read that I can switch over to a distributor and points (or Petronix),however I'd prefer to just switch out what I have with another part.

OMC is the only company that ever used that ignition system, so there isn't anything else around that will fit as a replacement.
Your best bet is to get a Delco EST Distributor Kit and install it. They cost about half of the parts needed to fix your present system.
