I was wondering what manual to get ,? it's a Chevy 4 Cyl. Mercruiser Thanks. By the way I had the stringers checked out and the boat seems solid. I bought the boat for 1800.00 how much money would you recommend that I invest in it before it's to much? I know it needs a new ,( Lower shift cable) about $350.00. Since they will have it a part should I have them put in new Bellows and what else they think I need? This is what the mechanic said I should do. Thanks this is my first boat''''

Ayuh,.... Ain't sure which motor ya got,.... What year is it,..??

The 165hp 4 cylinder is a Merc motor, the infamous 470,....
The Chevy 165 is a 6 cylinder,....

I'll move this to the Mercruiser forum for ya,....

The Merc factory manuals can be found by followin' the links in Don'S Adults Only section at the top of the I/O forums, or in my signature,....

Doing the shift cable and being the age it is, and not knowing the shape of the boots, I would also suggest replacing the boots.

As for how much money is to much, that's a personal decision. I have a boat worth 20K maybe, just put a bit more then 43K in it. Many others told me to sell it, oh well maybe next time

You can probably get the parts to do the shift cable and bellows for around what they are quoting you for just the shift cable.

Boot is just another term for the bellows. The job is not hard. I did it for the first time a few years ago. Before that the only thing I had done was general maintenance. Just follow the manual and you will be fine. I am a computer tech so if I can do it most people can. It took me about half a weekend day but that is start to finish with a few breaks.

Bellows are a 5-year maintenance item, so unless they have been replaced in the past few years, you should have them replaced.

For how much money to spend.... Boat's are money pits, so consider the money spent on them as an admission price to go out and have fun. You're never going to recoup the money you spend on a boat, and if you are tied to using a mechanic, it can get expensive really quick. Most of us here on the forums work on our own boats, so the cost to maintain them is far lower.

Boats are expensive to keep going. People say they don't want pay for the gas in one but that is the least of costs involved.

I think the marina is real proud of their work.

I don't see any need to replace the upper shift cable, lower yes, not upper

Just wondering? do most of you winterize your boat? $200.00 seems like a lot. Is there a book that would show how to do this? Thanks.

Depending on the boat $20 isn't that bad, but also depends on what they do for the 200.

Most here I would say winterize our own boats, not hard

At the top of the forum, in the "stickies" there is a DIY section that has a good post on winterizing your boat. (Or you can click here.).
