crestliner viking 14' top speed?

hey, i just recently got a 1957 viking 14' with a 1960 evinrude 40hp. The boat runs great but will only go 25mph and it seems like everyone else with an old 14' with a 40hp do 30-32mph. any sugestions why it wont go as fast as everyone elses? My outboard was trimed on the second pin and i tilted it 1 pin up and it didnt gain any top speed but it gained acceleration. it has a sting ray hydrofoil stabilizer and it sits about 10 inches under the water when coasting and at least 4 inches under water when cruising. The motor runs wide open at about 5000rpms in the water.

Most likely:

Poor rigging of outboard (height, trim).
Wrong prop.

The hydrofoil should be on top of the water when on plane; AV plate even with to and inch or so above bottom of boat. You may even have a long shaft outboard on a short transom.

You may be underpropped.

hey thanks for the advice, wat should i do as far as trim should i trim the motor out another notch? Also why did my boat gain acceleration but not top speed when i trimed it out a notch? How can i check if i have a longshaft of a short transom?

hey, i went outside and looked at the motor height and the cavitation plate is 2 inches below the keel of the boat could this be why it only goes 25mph?

most likely, yes. Try putting a couple of pcs. of furring strips between the motor and the transom to raise the whole engine and see if that helps. Don't over do it though. try .25 to .50" at a time.

if i raise the motor so its level with the keel how much top speed diference will that make? ALso would if accelerate any quicker.
