2008 Volvo 5.0GXI starts and runs great. At speed a chirping sound can be heard at first I thought it was spark ping or engine knock due to low octane. I have changed to high octane gas and added stabil ethanol marine treatment to each tank and it is still there. It can be heard in gear and out if you rev the engine up over 3-4K rpm. Any Ideas what it could be?

Re: Cricket sound

The only cricket sound I've ever heard comes from the serpentine belt, usually rubbing on a pulley.

Re: Cricket sound

Not the belt checked that the sound appears to come from the back side around the exhaust after it exits the manifold. Have checked for anything that might be loose also. It doesn't affect performance, hole shot is great and top end is around 59MPH, sound is just annoying.

Re: Cricket sound

Don't think it is in u-joints or the rubber drive coupling. It will make the sound in Neutral if you rev engine up to 3000-4000 RPM's.

Re: Cricket sound

Why do you think it cant be the u-joints or drive coupler?

You might just have to crawl in there with a mechanics stethoscope and find where it is coming from.

Could be a cricket !?!? :noidea:

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I often hear that sort of sound when a bearing is getting sloppy. In the area that you are describing, I would consider the gimbal bearing in the list of things to check.

Re: Cricket sound

If it is the Gimbal bearing then it has failed with less than 50 hours on the boat. I guess I will have to go see a mechanic.

Re: Cricket sound

Have you ever had your outdrive off? Even in neutral your driveshaft and gimbal still turn. It's coupled to the crankshaft of the engine via the splined coupling. All shifting is done within the outdrive itself.

Drive has never been off the boat. Checked the bellows last night and all is watertight. I will have to let a Mechanic take a peak at this. Thanks for the imput.

Re: Cricket sound

Wasn't the gimbal bearing or the ujoints. Chirp was from the power steering pulley a little belt dressing and it is gone.

Check the belt alignment. Seems to be a fairly common problem with this series for some reason. Do a search and get some suggestions.

So, it was coming from the front of the engine, not the rear? Those cricket do move around :D
