I have no numbers on my engine (plate is worn off), It is a 1998 90 hp Evinrude non-VRO (commercial grade I think). How do I know if it a cross flow or a 60 degree engine? Does this engine use a thermostat?

I think it is a E90TSLECM??

That motor, no matter what type will have a couple of thermostats. Looking at the block or even the hood will tell if it is 60 or 90 degrees. A triangle hood or block means 90*. A rectangular hood means 60*. If the space between the cylinders is about 5" wide, it is a 60* block.

BTW - 90* motors came in cross flow and looper style. 60* motors were all loopers.

Re: Cross flow or 60 degree ID

the model # you posted is for a CROSSFLOW motor........ without trying to figure the shape of the hood, if you pull the hood off, you can instantly recognize if the motor is a 60 degree or a 90 degree on the 115 and 90 HP models. If you can see the flywheel itself...then it is NOT a 60 degree looper. the 60 degree loopers have a completely covered flywheel with plastic shrouds that hold the linkage and optical eye and cover the power packs. and it says OIS 2000 on the back plastic cover over top the power packs and coils. the thermostats are very easy to access and remove on the 60 degree loopers, they are at the top of each head . the covers are plastic and have a hex the same size as the spark plugs. don't try to turn them off when its cold out..... the plastic breaks easily bob

" BTW - 90 * motors came in cross flow and looper style" , .................................................................................................................... NOT in 90 hp. I THINK the 90 degree loopers were all larger motors bob

Thanks - the flywheel is exposed, and BRP confirmed the engine is a E90TSLEU (97 model) so this is a 90 degree crossflow.
