The 89 140 is a big bore V4 looper. It'll have all the neat stuff like Quick Start and SLOW. Good motor.

The 1985 to 87 V4 loopers were a 3.500" std bore. In 1988 they went to 3.685" std bore.

Nope, the features are on the motor. Your control will work perfectly.

Re: crossflow or looper

So how do you tell the difference from the outside? Weren't the loopers a lot larger? A guy has a 140 Rude (light blue with dark blue ID decals) on a 335V Commanche Ranger for sale nearby. I found a 335 in my '89 Ranger catalog so it must be around that year. Engine cowl and lower unit seem to be the same size as my '72 Johnny 125 was.

Thanks,

Mark

Loopers are 60* motors and crossflows are 90*. Loopers are skinny compared to CF's.

Not quite. The 120-130-140 loopers (V-4) were quite a bit larger than their crossflow counterparts (88-140) and were 90 degrees.

Later loopers, 90-115 (V-4) were indeed 60 degrees.

Re: crossflow or looper

What is the difference between a cross flow and a looper? Which has the better advantage?

just wondering... I have a 86 90hp V4, would this be a cross flow or a looper?

would this be 60 or 90 degree? the motor seems very large

Re: crossflow or looper

86 90hp is a 90 degree crossflow.

basicly 2 different methods of combustion chamber scavenging. Crossflow uses a piston with a deflector to control and route intake charge while loop charging uses flat top pistons along with specific positioning of intake and exhaust ports to direct the intake charge. Crossflow enginees tend to be smoother idlers with flat torque curves, while Loopers generaly tend to be not as smooth at low speeds and have peakier torque curves. Loopers also have a slight edge reguarding fuel. efficiency

Re: crossflow or looper

jimmbo, I don't know about that......."slight fuel advantage. Having had both, no way did my direct charge Merc or any of my loopers compare to the gas guzzling crosses I had and I didn't even have a fat 50 which I understand never leave the pump. :%

I asked the question because I think I noticed some loopers at the dealer (In Whitesboro Kenny. d:) close to Texoma ) and the loopers I saw were huge.

I think I agree on the better idling. I can think back to 2 cylinder OMC's I had and for two cylinders they idled very well. My current looper is 3 cyls and idling is smooth and all, but not that smooth.....however, the '75 70 hp rude idled very smoothly.

I guess the one that is for sale is a cross.

Thanks,

Mark

Re: crossflow or looper

well first of all the 'direct charge' merc is a crossflow design.Even the 'power ported' versions were still crossflow.
The later OMC V4 crossflow9 92.6, 96.1, and 99.6 cubic in models had much improved economy when compared to the 'fat fifty' or the early 89.5 in models. Looper V4 blocks are bigger than the crossflow blocks, allows for the bigger bore and longer stroke. If you think the blocks are big, you should see the difference in the crankshafts

Re: crossflow or looper

I agree on the crossflow on the direct charge as the piston had the classic crossflow crown on it; not flat like loopers. But in the direct charge process they did something to really improve the fuel economy.
