I have a 1986 200hp omc outboard, It seized up on me. any sugestions on weather to rebuild or trade for newer unit? they ask me if its a looper or a cross flow. How can I tell? Whats better? Viking marine hAS REBUILT motors for @ 2500 with 90 day warrantee, others have newer 225 large bore units for 4500 with 1 yr warrantee. Or should I just have my powerhead rebuilt? any sugestions?

Howdy, GTX4.

I would go for the $2500 rebuilt.

You can probably get yours rebuilt for less, but then again it may cost more and still have the fault that caused the seize.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

If you do it your self, take block to Precision in Clearwater, they can bore block, check crank, and have parts.

Edited 12:27.
The carbuators on the 86 were changed and if you rebuild it would be wise to check all jet sizes. I cant find my notes, but the carbs were replaced with 87 carbs, they had a smaller bore.

Re: crossflow or looper?

The loop charged engines are more efficient. If the top of your pistons do not have raised areas, looking like a flat bladed screw driver, it is a loop charged engine. Try using the search feature with my member number to find out more about loop charged vs. cross flow. Bert :D
