1994 Crownline 182 project boat.... steering cable is all but seized. I have it unfastened at both ends, but cannot fish it out of the "chase" that it is in.

Both sides of the boat have a carpeted C-channel, with the open face of the C to the outboard side. Inside run electronics steering cables etc. The electronics and the steering cable are fastened together and secured inside somehow with straps. . . thus my inability to pull the steering cable through, the straps wont allow the rack or the aft end nut to pass.

But . . . . I cannot figure out how to remove the chase. No fasteners visible. I've removed the interior side panel trim to visualize access, no luck. I really don't want to just pry and find out that I am breaking wood that is bonded to the hull.

So stupid question, but has anyone ever messed with this chase trim piece on an older Crownline?

Thanks gang!

Well for anybody coming behind me with the same issue, the solution I employed this evening was to cut off one end of the cable and pull it through that way. Ordered a replacement cable and will either try to tuck up in the channel loose or will mount it on top of the chase with hose clamps.

You should find screws buried in the carpet, the fibers usually hide the screw heads pretty well. Just look and tap along the edges of the panel till yo find them.
