Looks like it may need to be sand blasted off. You could try a small wire brush attachmnet on an electric drill but, the corrosion looks to deep for a wire brush.

After sand blasting, I would paint it? What kind of paint? It looks pretty pitted in soome areas.

First, use a self-etching primer and the a finish coat of acrylic enamel. You can get the color from any good auto body shop or I get mine from www.nymarine.com.The deeper pitted areas can be filled with a product like Bondo. Just get marine grade materials and you'll find the job isn't to hard to do.

Honestly?
I think you may find you need more than new paint.
I see a broken Skeg, and I am sure you have that much pitting inside

Matt, It appears someone painted the aluminum gearcase with some antifouling paint, and then left it in the water. It also appears that the A-F paint was copper based, and the results indicate why this is a bad idea.

I would inspect the pitting to see how deep it goes. If it is not too deep, sand it sorta clean and trowel it with marine surfacing putty. No prime and paint.

I agree with Chris on this one. Somebody who didn't know what they were doing painted it with A-F paint. Seen this a number of times down here in FL. and I never could get them looking good again. Just don't get to heavy with any grinders when you try to clean it up.

After looking at the pic of the L/U again, I'd be curious to see what the P/H looks like.
