Ohhh man. Just lost my OJ over that one. Reading the comments looked like one big wave crashed over the bridge and took out navigation controls..also was running on one screw and unable to head into the waves...

A passenger ship, the Voyager enroute between Spain's Balearic Islands to the Italian island of Sardinia, radioed a distress call earlier today after getting into difficulties in heavy seas. A huge wave shattered a bridge window, damaging control systems inside.
The Bahamian-registered ship is carrying 776 passengers and crew, 480 of them Spanish. Some sustained minor injurues when the ship sailed into the storm at 8am UTC today.
French and Spanish tugs have been dispatched to assist the vessel, and the British gas tanker Gimi has diverted to offer help and is relaying radio signals from the stricken ship. Voyager "is in a difficult situation but is not drifting", according to the French coastguard, with only a single propeller still providing force.
The ship was sailing from Tunis to Barcelona when she encountered the storm. The crew have restored power to two of her four engines and she is now diverting to Tunis, and is expected to reach port on Tuesday.

Re: Cruise liner tossed around video

There is a llink in the comments section that is for a video taken in the interior of the ship. What is astounding to me, is that it shows an area with passengers present, in which unsecured furniture and other items are being thrown about. This makes me wonder about the safety procedures adhered to by the cruise industry, because there is no way that passengers should be put in such a situation.

I've been to sea in conditions that caused my ship to experience that kind of rolling and pitching. We had no injuries and required no assistance. The difference, however, is that I was aboard a military ship end everything was secured. Heck, even the "mess deck" managed to provide meals of cold sandwiches, etc., so that the crew remained fed.

Yep, been there, done that. Except it was on a WWII-era "tin-can", North Atlantic in November. At one point we were laid over to one side until a rogue wave righted us back up.

Hit a storm like that in the Pacific sailing from Pearl to Yokohama aboard the troop carrier U.S.S. Patrick. No stabilizers, of course. Like posted previously, everything was secured... except stomachs.

Didn't even see any bow stabilizer planes on that ship.

Wonder what made the three engines quit. I'd a hated to be the ones down there having to work on them.

Rode out a storm like that in the Mediterranean in the winter on a destroyer tender. Not a fast ship, but fairly seaworthy. A couple of cans passed us and signaled by searchlight "Are you riding safely?" They looked like submarines.

I liked rough weather. The chow lines were short.

:eek: Yeah, when I watched that I figured there must be more to the story, like the stabilizers failed or something.

I wouldn't want mop duty after that...I'm sure a lot of buffet lunches got hurled :p

I was on a cruise like that in the North Atlantic in the winter time, but it had USS in front of it. Fortunately bad weather was predicted and we doubled up the chains on the flight deck. It was interesting to be on the bridge of a carrier and watch waves swallow up the bow and drench every plane forward and just past the bridge.
