I've been looking at older cruiser style boats lately. I'm thinking something with a single small V8 Merc or Volvo, 24-25 feet with command bridge etc.
How expensive are they to run compared to a 20 foot aluminum with a 4.3 v6? Do you run them up on plane or at hull speed?

24-25 feet with command bridge etc. you need a big V8 or twin V6.

Re: Cruiser Planing?

POWER is very subjective, but I consider my rig and powerplant to be a near perfect match. Planes out easily with 6 adults aboard, gets better than 2 mpg at cruise and tops out well into the 40's. I certainly have no need for a bigger motor.

I strongly recommend a dual prop setup (V-P Duo or Merc Bravo 3) if you can find it. This boat is much easier to maneuver in close quarters than my 21' outboard was. My docking ability immediately imprioved by 1000%. There's no prop walk, and dropping it into reverse at low speed is like hitting a brake. I just love it.

Good luck in your search.
