to get the boat at its most efficient running angle which saves a LOT of fuel

and many times depending on conditions you can make the boat ride a lot more comofortable LESS pounding ect.

tommays

If you always have flat calm water, no wind, and its only you driving, and the load is always the same, and you only drive 1 speed, and the trim is where you want it there is no reason to change it. Me, I see a lot of different water, waves, and wind, my load varies, and so does my speed so my finger is always on the trim buttom and my hand is on the throttle. But my car is a 6-speed so take my opinion for what its worth.

Re: cruising around, why trim?

Do you mean trim up (trim out), or trim down (trim in), when cruising?

Cruising here means pottering (ie. boat not on plane), as opposed to WOT.

Trim out = bow lift = less wetted area = less drag = faster = better economy.

Trim in = assists hole shot. Flatter ride in rough water. More drag and less efficient.

I'm with JimD. Hand always on throttle and finger on trim button.

Trimming up when crossing a following wave will prevent an event called broaching where the bow as it crosses the waves, drives into the water, turns the boat very sharply and tries to flip you out. Ended up with whiplash for a week and a half when this happened to me. The link below has some very useful information on the subject.

http://www.clubmarine.com.au/internet/clubmarine.nsf/docs/MG19-2+Technical
