Crusader starter not cranking

I have a 1988 Crusader 350 (270HP) and when attempting to start the engine today, the starter did not crank. It was working fine this past weekend. While attempting to crank it over from the bridge, my wife noticed a burning smell and some light smoke. She did not know where it was coming from. The battery is fine (fully charged) and while attempting to start the engine, the solonoid for the parallel start did make a single click. The engine starter made no noise whatsoever. I subsequently felt the ignition coil with my hand is it was extremely hot.

The other engine started no issues.

Not sure what my next move is...the starter, or could the ignition coil be bad?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave

Re: Crusader starter not cranking

Something shorted out and the coil shouldn't be real hot. Look for your engine circuit breaker and check your battery switches. The battery switch may have over heated during the short. My first guess is your starter went out and may have burned our the fusable link if it has one, if it doesn't it may have fried something else. My battery combiner receives it's power from the house battery (one engine), yours being twin I would think the relay gets its power from the engine which didn't start.
