Hi all I have bought from a friend of mine an 86 Doral Colt....15ft 10in....with an 86 erude 90hp. I like the boat, have been going out in it for years so know it's life history. I'm on Ahmic lake Kenny so as you know have lots of lake to play on. With the lock in Mag can go 40 miles from Ahmic Harbour to Burks Falls. My question is any ideas on a good rpm for covering water without sucking the tank dry. It will run high 30's amost 40 mph at 5500 rpm, but thats sucking it back. Seems to be pretty smooth at the 3000 to 3500 range, anyone else have some input?.....thanks.....cheers

By God I love that lake !!!! Went to Lake Conestoga last weekend. Nice but nowhere near as nice as Ahmic. We will be there again next year so hope to bump in to you (not literally) out there. We stay at the Ahmic Lake Resort cottages when we are there. You know, the place with the swiss restaurant on it.
I think that 5,500 rpm at WOT is good. My 140hp Johnson WOT range is 5,000 to 6,000 rpm. My 14" X 17" pitch prop will run 6,200 RPM and my 14" X 19" pitch prop runs at 5,500 RPM at WOT. I use the lower pitch for pulling up skiers and the bigger pitch for cruising and tubing. I usually run around 4,000 rpm and 35 mph when cruising and it is not only comfortable but quieter for cruising. Hope this helps a bit.
By the way, where are you in relationship to where I stay ???
Great to see you out here and have a fellow "Ahmic Laker" to chat with.
Look forward to chatting out here,
I have some photos of my outfit in the Doral section here. Why dont you post a few of yours.
Talk Soon,
Ken.

Re: crusing rpm

We love the resturant at Ahmic Lake, thats a great place for food. Esp like to sled over in the winter and have the Sunday brunch. if you went up the lake to go in the river and up to mag, before you go in the mouth of the river go east. I'm on the north shore right by "lone rock", thats the one thats out in the middle of the lake with a marker on it. Ahmic lake resort is prob 15 or 20 min by my boat. Quicker with the sled.....lol. Thanks for the in put.Going up tommorow and we want to go through the lock at mag and go through Cecebe and up the mag river to Burks Falls for lunch. Did that with a friend on his boat once and it was quite interesting.....cheers....phil

Re: crusing rpm

We did the trip to Burks the week before the long weekend. Locked throught at Magnetawan at 10:30 ....thats the first up opening. Got into Cecebe about 10:45, then through Cecebe to the Magnetawan river, thats a little trickey to find but gps helped....as well as following someonelse....lol. About an hour from the locks to the docks at Burks, just crusing at about 20mph to keep on plane. Interesting trip, most of the mag still wild. Some nice places and some rough looking trailers as well. Some places not quite sure how they get there because there are not alot of roads, maybe by trail or maybe by boat. Anyway good trip ,we had lunch at the pub then came back. Lock is 5 bucks for a return day pass and worth it just to be in it and watch it work......cheers....phil

Sounds like a great trip. I plan to do it myself next year with the family while we are up there. We were at the lock this year ...but unfortunately not by boat !!
Like the sound of the pub for lunch thing as well.
Thanks for the posting and I will remember the GPS when we go.

Re: crusing rpm

Here is a link to the brochure for your boat I think. It is a 1985 version and in French but it is all I could get hold of. Mine is the Doral 164 in there (closed deck version)
Great boat you have for that lake, Ideal I would say.

Re: crusing rpm

The entire kenmyfamily will be at Ahmic from July 5th to 15th this year, including my 85 yr old Dad and my 83 yr old Mom, coming from England for the trip.
My Dad wants to go water skiing !!! because that is how he is. He went hot air ballooning for his 80th Birthday !!!
I am trying to convince him that a sedate tube ride would be just fine. He will most likely think otherwise !!!!

Re: crusing rpm

There is a real good chance we will be there then. My lady wants to spend lot's of time there this summer. And she wants to run the boat herself and be comfy doing it. I'd like that because I want to get her to take me sking. I have tried the tube thing but I would rather water ski like the old days. Just got to buy some skis now. Taking the boat up this week, got the dock down and in the water and I think the worst of the flies are gone.....boy I hope they are..If you have gps we are at N45*37.892 W079*37.747. we are the little cottage in the small bay. My neighbors new boat house is bigger than my cottage.....lol.....anyway I'll be on the board here a bit more now.....cheers....phil.....we could go to burks for lunch...

Re: crusing rpm

Correction to the date. We will arrive on the 6th July and are going to a different cottage this time. Very close to Ahmic Lake Resort. I will P.M. you with the exact address when my wife gets home as she knows it and I do not !!!!. I do have a G.P.S. and will note the co-ordinates. It would be great to meet up and chat and share a beer or 2 !!!!!
We have ski's if you need them (old ones albeit) and you are welcome to borrow our tube.....or even come out with us to ski etc.
A trip to Burks sounds great.

Re: crusing rpm

By the way, my boat photos are in the "finally ready for the season" thread in this section.
I have still not been out yet this season due to many business trips this year and the weather and wind on Lake St Clair when I am home.

Thanks for the tube offer but we have some, actually one is still in the box, Barbara tried it once and hates it and not that much for me by myself. Like I said I'd rather ski. Off to the cottage today.....cheers.....phil

Re: crusing rpm

Well we are leaving in a couple of hours. Less family than expected going this time due to issues at work etc, however there will be 7 of us at least. Maybe 4 more in a couple of days. So if you see our little Doral near your dock when I set the GPS you will know who it is. We are staying near Toronto tonight so our son can join us and our daughter and her boyfriend are at Wonderland today and will meet us at our hotel tonight. Rest of the journey in the morning and at the cottage by 3 p.m. ish, off to the grocery, beer and liquor store for the wife and my mom while we put the boat in.
Rock And Roll.
Hope to see you up there.
