Re: Cummins VT903

I know that motor inside and out. I worked on them for 7 years in the Coast Guard. What do you want to know?

Big and HEAVY Pushrod V-8
903 CID
318 shaft horsepower with turbo
285 hp without.
Very easy to work on, they're older motors so most if not all have been rebuilt many times.
The VT903M was made specifically for Marine use. If it doesn't have the M on the end then it was retrofitted probably from a bus engine or tractor, I would be careful if that's the case.

Let me know if I can answer any specific questions.

Also used in class 8 trucks for many years. 70's thro 80's from memory.
I used to buy them out of Texas from a truck dismantler and bring them to NZ.
They were popular here as they were 350 hp in truck application and International Harvester sold a lot of trucks here that used a 903 non turbo rated at 325 hp but with quite a drop in torque from the 903T.
Pretty strong engine either way.

Peter
