Thinking of trying my hand at spraying and was wondering what anyone's thoughts were on the 32 oz cup gun with external mix nozzle from harbor freight as a starter gun.

I have used their HPLV guns with good success.

This one should be fine for what you want to do.

I have one. There are some good clips on utube that shows how to adjust the gun which is very important. Another very important thing is knowing the paint you are using. Dont forget to use a resporator. The one from HF seems to work well but NOT intended for all paints . It takes alot of practice to get good enough to paint a car. I am still trying to learn how and we wont even go into the part about what happens if you get water in your air line.

Tip size is very important with viscosity, and air compressor capability. You could get a much better gun for a little more. Utilize this sight for info - I would not buy from them!

I have this setup. http://www.spraygunworld.com/products/DeVilbiss/Finishline4/Finishline4Start.html

I got it off of ebay for about $169.00 and did my first basecoat/clearcoat paintjob on my son's first car. It is amazing how much less overspray there is with an HVLP gun as opposed to the old Binks siphon style gun. You do need compressor capacity to run it though.

The gun is very versatile with the 4 tips sizes.

HF HVLP guns are good to learn with. I have several, we shoot primer with them. As noted pay attention to nozzle size. Very important depending on the material viscosity.

Go for the gravity fed rather than siphon cup.

Good filter on the air line is money well spent. A cheap inline will get you started for learning.

Pay good money for a respirator. Keep it sealed up, when not in use, in a ziplock bag to extend filter life.

Good luck have fun.

PS the deVilbiss gun mentioned above is a great gun! A good friend has one.
