Posting for my dad. He has a 1988 15 Johnson that has been a solid motor but all of of sudden it has developed a wierd problem. It starts right up and after a little while it just dies. Almost 'seizes' up (will not turn over). He waits about 5 minutes to cool off and it starts right up. He replaced the impellar and it spits out water fine. Engine does not appear to be overheating. Any ideas? Don't want him to be stranded out there. Thanks in advance.

P.S. The compression is 110 and 130. Is that bad?

Re: Curious issue with my dads 15 Johnson

Your Dad's motor has a pee hole and there should be a good solid stream coming from it at all times when the motor is running. It should not be spitting water. From what you describe, the motor is likely overheating. As a result of overheating, your head gasket may be shot and that would give reason to the variation in compression. Many times when the leg is placed back on the motor the water tube isn't aligned properly with the rubber grommet on the top of the pump. The grommet gets pinched and the result is poor to no flow out of the pump. I would recheck the water tube alignment. Best of luck. Rick.

21 years old, it would change the tstat also. it is a very easy job. the tstat is just above the top plug, under the triangle cover. parts needed.
