My boat is a bow rider. Eventually I'm going to re-do the bow seats (maybe this winter). When I do this, I'm thinking I might make a third piece that would "fill in the whole", so the entire bow would be padded. In case I want to take a nap out at sea :D
So I was thinking about how I could mount the insert. I don't want anything permanent, just something you can place there and it will stay until you pick it back up. So what I was thinking was if I took something like a 3" diameter wooden dowel, cut it right down the middle, and attached each half circle to the bottom of the cushion.
THEN I'd need some kind of bracket for those dowels to seat into. Something like this:

Except something that looks nice and is chrome, since it's going to be exposed most of the time.

...if I could draw, I'd draw pictures of what I mean, and it would make a lot more sense I suspect.
Here's an old picture of the bow, so you can get an idea of what I'm thinking about:

Where would the cushion be stored when not in use? I ask, because you could make a removable base out of PVC and then attach the cushionn to it. Something like this.

I'll probably just stick it in the house. The PVC 'table' will be way too big. If it's just the cushion, I can slide it anywhere to store it.

why not just run a 1X2 lip around the upper edge of the existing seat supports and use a 3/4" piece of ply to create cushion, cushion seats on the lip similiar to how the table in a travel trailer converts to bed. The span is short enough 3/4 unsupported should hold the weight, and you can glass the lip and bottom of cushion and make it look like part of the boat. Just an Idea, but would be fairly simple solution.

Re: Cushion Insert Hardware

woodie has a point...storage is an issue in boats.

what i would do is cut holes in the fiberglass under each bench......then slide a 2x4 into the holes....this will give you cushion support.

then just lay your plywood backed cushion over the 2x4's

when not in use....the 2x4\s would lay in the gunwhales....

that way...you dont have a lip to bang your knees on when not in use
