The boat had a polyurethane tank inside the galley cabinet underneath the sink. The tank was strapped to the cabinet up on top and to the floor. Since I have the boat all torn apart, I'd like to make the best use of this area and relocate the fresh water tank.

My plan is to build the tank into the side bilge, beneath the galley. I came across a DIY Boat Article, which shows how it's basically done. Instead of making the tank outside and slipping it into place, I'll build the tank right into the hull ( little different from article ) same concept.

I'll first cut a rectangle on the galley floor exposing the side bilge. This area is 1/2" wood covered with glass and poly. Next, sand all sides with 80 grit. Wet out all sides including the fresh virgin cut wood with epoxy. Lay blown mat. When this dries, a second coat of epoxy to ensure a seal. Fill it with water a gallon at a time to obtain capacity. Mark the water level and check water level the next day. Glass in epoxy sealed baffles as recommended on the DIY Boat article. Cut vent, fill, pump out, and inspection holes onto top piece cut earlier. Epoxy virgin cut wood. Attach fittings with 5200. Sand exterior surface of top cover. Figure out how to suspend the top over the opening to wet out, 2 layers blown mat for strength. Galley will sit on perimeter of tank.

I plan on a black water tank the same way.

Is their anything wrong with building it into the hull?
Anyone here done this before? Will the black water smell soak through the epoxy (not according to the article).

Any additional advise or suggestions would be great.

I will make it myself, so aluminum, steel, or pre-made tanks are out...

Thanks!!!

Re: Custom Make Built-In holding Tank.

WOW, I just came across this post on a different forum. Simple, and essentially leak proof.

...The holding tank is unusual but practical and functional. It was made out of 2- 10in. i.d. White type PVC pipe each about 5 ft. long joined together and stacked one above the other with reducing Tees 10 x2 and the ends capped with PVC slip joint cap. This whole thing is made out of PVC pipe which is easy to plumb to because of the available fittings cheap. and glued together. You get 3.4 Imp. Gals per foot of pipe. Another type to consider.

I need to check if the piping will fit the area. Not sure if it will work as a black tank though.

The pipe idea is nice, but only 1 5" diameter by 7 feet would fit. So back to the original idea. I have the floor cut. already.... I know you all love pictures...

Re: Custom Make Built-In holding Tank.

Well I'm leak testing the tanks now. I have found a few leaks that I'm currently filling with epoxy thickened with q-cells. Couple questions...

Will Q-Cells hold up to the chemicals & substances in a holding tank and remain waterproof?

How about 5200?

I was thinking a running a bead of 5200 on the edges of the top cover to ensure a seal. With the top on, it will be difficult to apply more epoxy through the 6" access plate. So my plan was to LIBERALLY run a big FAT bead on the cover and seal from the outside with epoxy. All sides of the wood has 2 coats of epoxy to seal.

I'd hate to do this than find out later that the Poop smell is permeating through the wood.

THANKS!!!

Re: Custom Make Built-In holding Tank.

The holding tank is now leak free. Next, the fresh water tank still needs some patching up to do. I do the patching in the AM. Can't wait to close these suckers up. They were a PIA to make work!

Hopefully someone can answer some of my questions from the previous post.

THANKS!!!.
