cut in outdrive boot

I was changing the oil in outdrive today and noticed that I had a 6" cut in the boot.I am really getting tired of things like this happening. How difficult would it be to mount an outboard motor on a 83' Galaxy CC.The transom should be strong enough to hold it,if not I can do some strength work on it.The problem I am not sure how to remedy is pluging the hole in the transom where the outdive currently is.Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Re: cut in outdrive boot

kracker, <br />My previous boat was 17' Galaxy and I have considered swap to a newer OB motor. The time and expense factor made no scenes for me to get this done. I have sold the Galaxy. There are a lot of posts on transom repair. If you follow those, it will give you a good idea on how to close the drive cut out opening in the transom. Whether or not it needs extra strength depends on the size of your new outboard. There are quite a few things involved into the conversion. I would first evaluate if it is really worse it for you to go through the effort. Selling this boat and getting an outboard design boat is one of the options I would seriously consider.

outboards are nice but its not like they dont have there own problem areas and you might be a bit supprised at how much the parts cost <br /><br />that transome thing is a huge job if its done right <br /><br />tommays

Easy enough to change the boot. What got it? Had mine on for 30 years now and no problems.

not sure how it got there, It looks like a coon may have gotten a hold of it.Any idea how much the boot costs and what would the labor consist of.I am pretty good turning wrenches,so I would be doing the work myself.

Now yusta darn minute. You go off blaming the boat for THIS?<br />" noticed that I had a 6" cut in the boot.I am really getting tired of things like this happening." when in reality "a coon may have gotten a hold of it". You need to set some traps...cheaper than a new outboard!
