Cutting Floor

Hi I,m new to boating.I have an 14 foot 85 Thundercraft. Was looking at replacing soft spots in floor. My question is regarding cutting plywood. I have a spot I need to cut on a stringer. Hoping to cut it half way so I can butt new piece up to it. What is best way to cut floor without cutting into stringer? Do I use a circular saw set at 1/2 inch or is there another tool or method? Thank you

Also, bear in mind that soft spots in the floor are often the "tip of the iceberg", indicating more problems below (rotten sringers and/or transom, and soaked foam). Be sure you check those out thoroughly.

The stringers seem to be sound. The sots on floor seem to be rotted from the top down looking like moisture was trapped in between carpet and flooring..I was planning on cutting replacement piece so it would land 1/2 way. I dont know if anyone would suggest fastening wood to outside of stringer for more support?

You could attach a piece to the stringer. You also might want to attach cleat to the existing decking so the new piece can be fastened to the old decking. You could cut a piece of plywood about 6" wide and as long as one side of the hole. Attach that plywood cleat (after waterproofing it, of course) to the underside of the existing deck using screws and a strong, waterproof adhesive (e.g., construction adhesive like PL Premium) so that half is under the existing deck and half will be under the patch. Then glue and screw the patch down to the cleat and the stringer. I'd cover the whole thing with fiberglass to waterproof it, too.

Hi
I have 85 fibreglass Thundercraft and replacing floor. I let project sit but desperately need to get it done this year as time is running out. Unfortunately I was plagued by illness or I would of gotten it done sooner.I need to know how to cut the floor out so I can join it on top of stringer. Its also kind of difficult to take measurements as floor curves into front so there is nothing square as a reference
