I need to cut out bulkheads and some seat boxes against the hull. Any tips for cutting flush without damaging the hull?

The closer I cut, the less grinding I have to do.

There is one fact you can count on that will make this job easier than you think; the wood is not touching the fiberglass. There is a gap in between them. Using this fact, don’t feel compelled to cut very close to the hull. You can cut a 1/8 or ? of an inch away from the hull (using a Fiberglass cutting blade on a reciprocating saw) or a cutting disc on an angel grinder. After the wood is separated, you can fair the extra FB using a flap disk. Personally I liked the use of the cutting disk as the space and angel permits. It is easy to cut a line on different distances from the hull and see if I am still cutting through the wood or I hit the gap. The disk is also much cheaper the blade which tends to bend very quickly. I limited my reciprocating saw use to those tight corners that I couldn’t reach with my cutting disk. It will get much easier when you get the hang of it.

Or a good 1 of these multitools:

My, lets call it inexpensive , 1 from Harbor Freight will do he job, but a name brand 1 w/ a better blade attachment head would do it much better. It was invaluable uncovering my rubrail thru bolts that were buried in resin & glass along the interior of the hull/cap joint.

Re: Cutting out glassed instructures

I took out all my stringers and bulkheads. I started with the multi-function tool jb mentioned. It worked fine but a little slow if you have a lot to do. Tried the recip saw. Blades bend easily (as mentioned above) but the biggest issues for me were how deep the blade might be hitting, and controlling the blade (since it flexes so much) was impossible.

My best approach was a cutting disc to get close (a lot of control) and then grind out the rest. Don't be afraid of grinding. I used a 7" grinder/sander with a 24 grit disc. Ate the FG up like butter.

Hope this helps.
