Do I understand correctly that this lump does not have a head gasket and that this cover is purely part of the water jacket. What possible problems could be expected with the failure of the cover gasket as I have got intermittent firing problems on the bottom cylinder and the plug looks a little clean. A while ago I overheated this engine briefly, but enough to compromise the exhaust baffle gasket and ended up with grey gloop in the exhaust. Replacing all the side cover gaskets rectified this.

Any thoughts appreciated..

Keith B....

It should not affect the firing...

if the cover or gasket fail, the worst that will happen is you will have water leak out next to the plugs. oh well. then just get a new gasket. those mercs dont have cylinder heads( dont know why?)

Hi keith
Is that cover gasket dripping right onto that misfireing plug? Bet it is when the water pressure comes , Electricity always seeks the easy way to groung look for arcing on the block or cover.

It isnt leaking externally, I was just pulling at straws wondering if any failure of this cover or associated gasket could cause water to enter the motor but apparently not.

Thanks Guys. I will continue on my other thread.

Regards Keith B....
