1990 60hp Johnson VRO
3 questions
1. I would like to inspect my cylinder head gasket. Can I remove the head and leave the head cover and gasket intact with the head. I am looking in my manual and am concerned with what is called a Head screw (right side as looking at the spark plugs) Will I have to remove the cover to expose the screw, or can I leave the cover attached.

2. The manual also say's not to use auto gasket sealer, is this a fact

3. Will removing the head expose the piston rings. I don't belive so, just checking. Thanks for the help

Re: Cylinder head removal

Bennet,If you remove the head from your engine you'll need to install a new gasket.Just a one shot deal. You will be able to see the piston heads but not the rings.Be sure and loosen the head bolts in the reverse pattern of the torquing sequence. This will prevent possible cracking or warping of the sealing surface.

Re: Cylinder head removal

Don't understand your cylinder head gasket question. The only cylinder head screws I am aware of is the cylinder head bolts. The head gasket may stick to the cylinder head or the powerhead or a combination of both when head is removed.Hence the need to replace with new gasket and thoroughly clean both sealing surfaces.

Re: Cylinder head removal

There is no water cover plate on that head. The only other screws are 4 in the thermostat cover, which does not have to come off.

If your cylinder head has a cover plate it is not a 1990 60 hp 56 cid motor. Please post the actual model number so we know what you really have. The answers will make a lot more sence if we are all talking about the same motor. Its just a little hard to see from here. Maybe I need a better pair of glasses?

Let us know!

Re: Cylinder head removal

The head on this model should be one piece, should be 14 head screws. These screws have washer made to screw.

Re: Cylinder head removal

The manual I have is not very good (SELOC) the only illustration of a 3 cylinder shows one Head Screw (from the head to the block) in the upper right hand side. I didn’t quite understand why the screw was there. I will post my motor model as soon as I can get it. As I look from plug to carb, it looks like I have a cylinder head cover, gasket, cylinder head, gasket then cylinder block ?

Yep, thats the one piece head. Other than the small thermostat cover (4 bolts) there should be no other screws or bolts in the head except, as Clanton mentioned, the 14 holding it to the block.

Re: Cylinder head removal

They dont (at least the OE factory manuals dont) specifically say "automotive" sealer. The OE manuals say "do not use sealer". Thats actually stamped on the OE gaskets. If you use the Evinrude / Johnson (OE) factory gaskets you dont have to use sealer.

There are some sealers on the market that react with the impregnated sealer in the OE gasket. The E/J brand sealer (Gasket Sealing Compound) will not react. We do use sealer and thats what we use. Do not use Adhesive M.

Good luck!
