I experienced idle issues last time out and boat stalled and had to work with boat drive in gear to docks. Well didnt work out well cause motor died on me drifting in. Crash! I've looked into repairing and I KNOW I need to grind whats damaged from the inside. BUT my question is this, Is it still safe to take it out on the water perhaps once or twice before I repair it? Will the damage done be aggrevated by more use?? I've taken a strong hose to it and no water leaks in. Also by looking at it what do you think it would cost if I take it to a shop?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...
I don't think you'll hurt anything running it...

It'll probably co$t ya a pretty penny to pay somebody to fix it...

Welcome to iboats.....

Yup is sure looks self inflicted.... ouch!

Well....... first I doubt you will get an accurate "cost if I take it to a shop?" for many reasons. We have NO IDEA where you are and we do not know what is in your area for repair people.

Did you have insurance? I would make a claim. If you do not have insurance and depending on the year of the boat, your skills and your tenacity it could be fixed (DIY do it yourself) multiple ways.

I doubt it is an unsafe damages spot and I would probably seal it with cheap silicone for the time being.... silicone fails and it will be removed for the repair.

BTW ......... Around here...... we would call it a damaged BOW ;)

I definately agree with Bob_VT on looking in to an insurance claim. I do this kind of work for a living and as a ballpark for a total repair (replacing the rubrail, grinding back the glass (the repair area will actually be twice the area that appears damaged), layup, fairing, spraying the gel, wetsanding, and remounting everything I would not be surprised if it was in the neighborhood of $2-3k depending on where you live which will determine and labor rates for marine repair.

As far as taking the boat out a few more times, you should be fine. As a temp fix I would take some shrink wrap tape and tape over the broken glass. You can probably get this from any marina, or order online from Dr-shrink.com In a pinch duct tape would work as well, however won't look as nice :)

Hope this helps!

I think you could do all the grinding on the outside ( recommended ).

Just be careful about how you use that forward cleat.. ( dont tie upwards on it ).

Your probably looking the the area of 2-4k for a yard/shop to do the repair depending on your location. Thats with materials, labor and reputation.

I have noticed the the damage extends in the blue all the way down to your pinstripe.

YD.

PS. That is a big repair for coasting into a dock ;) .. you must have been going at quite a skip. And who knows how damageit was prior to this impact ( looks like repairs patched in already ).

Re: Damaged fiberglass Nose (pics)

Thank you gents for the welcome and the advise. I love this website and have already repaired the idle problems with the DIY section here. I was insured at the time but honestly, I dont use the boat that often anymore and did not get around to repairing the damage before it lapsed. Im in Southern California and realize the cost will be redicoulous. Also my closest lakes around me require a reservation made several months in advance which is one of the main reasons we stopped going more often (current gas prices hurt too) I'll probably just use some silicone to minimize water leak if any for now. Thanks again for the tips!

Re: Damaged fiberglass Nose (pics)

yeah reservations are required at almost all the lakes here in Southern California. Too many boaters and even more Waverunners/Seadoos. Really sucks that we have to plan way ahead of time just to go out.

The idle issue was fixed by pulling the needles with the spings on them and spraying the hell out of anything inside. The carb was rebuilt a year ago and I've always run and store with seafoam in the fuel.

As far as insurance, I didnt worry too much at the time cause I know how to to autobody work and didnt think the damage is that bad. I enjoy trying to fix things myself if at all possible and with the internet, you can accomplish just about anything now a days. But yeah at 4K to fix, I should have called the insurance co right away..

Wow that really would suck....so if it's pouring down rain on your scheduled day you're just out of luck, huh? I've seen a couple of launch ramps closed around here on super busy days (July 4th weekend or so), but that's just because the parking area is full, and you just have to drive a few miles to the next ramp....
