I have a 1982 blufin boat with a 1982 50hp johnson that currently has a 11 3/4 17 aluminum prop on it. I think it has to high of a pitch on it. I am only turning 4800 RPM's and would like to turn more. When I purchased the boat it had a spare 12 1/4 X 15 prop with it. One of the blades has some damage on the tip. I would like to know if it is to much damage to use or if it would be ok to use on a trial run. I want to take it out and see how it performes before I take it in to have it fixed. I would hate to spend the money to have it fixed if it doesnt perform like i want it to.

Thanks

Chris

Re: damaged prop for trial run

Your not going to get a good read with that, plus you run the risk of damaging the shaft or shaking a seal out of it.

Also looks like that has been repaired twice before, per the extra stamps in the hub face. You will have to ask the prop shop if they can ever do it again.

Your prop shop may loan you a prop to try, or like mine, I buy one and if I dont like it I can trade it back for another as long as there is no damage to it.

Yeah, that prop needs to be rebuilt (if possible) or replaced. I've seen worse damage than that be restored.
Don't run it as is, you'll likely get bad vibrations which may cause some damage to components of your motor.

Without your boat size its difficult to say if a 15 would be better.
I can say the a 15 is pretty typical of most applications.

I was just wondering what you decided on your splashwell, if you cut it out or not? If so could you post pics. My Sylvan is nearly identical and I just removed it, best thing I've ever done on the boat.

I just dropped a prop off at the shop that had some minor nicks around all the edges, no bends. The guy said just hose small nicks would cost me about 100RPM and cause some vibration.

Re: damaged prop for trial run

The boat is a 16' deep v. I get about 4800 rpm and about 33mph with me and two dogs. I will be using it as a hunting boat so I will be adding about another 600lbs with a blind and decoys. From everything I have read the 15 would be best for my application. What is you thoughts.

Sub I ended up removing the splashwell and put in a bench. I will get some pic and put them up later. It made a big difference for me. It has allowed me to run a tiller on it. I use it as a hunting boat and removing the counsil has opened everything up. I believe that the bench is just as strong as the splashwell.

Thanks

Chris

Is the boat truly a deep V with about 18 to 20 degrees at the transom?
Your speed seems pretty good Is it by gps? The 15 could add up to "about" 400 rpm
It will be interesting to see how it reacts to another 600 lbs.

Think I screwed up sending you a reply to your message. Thanks for the picks. You did a great job on it. Is that deck made from wood? Is it painted, or what finish did you put on it? Thanks!

Prop looks fixable, PropMD does those for about $40 Craigslist is full of used decent props....I would bet you'll be much happier with a 15 pitch, especially fully loaded.

Re: damaged prop for trial run

Went to a local prop shop and he had a used one for $50 so I picked it up. The shop did say that the prop had been worked on a few times and it was in rough shape. Have not had a chance to take it out and test it. Thanks for everybodys input.
