Re: Damaged Prop

I definitely would not use it, as the vibrations from being out of balance and the damage could damage your drivetrain/motor...

However, you don't need a new one either. Any good prop shop should be able to make that look almost like new for cheaper than a new prop. (unfortunately, I've Ops Checked this several times this summer...)

Each time it's repaired, the blades do get a little thinner tho, so subsequent propstrikes do more damage to the prop than previously...

YMMV,

John

Re: Damaged Prop

That looks like an aluminum prop, and for a 25HP motor you should be able to find a new one for about $75, then maybe have your old one repaired and use for a spare. If you're motoring around rocks much then maybe a good idea to have a spare.

Exactly why I am a big fan of a good ALUMINUM prop. Impacts like that on a stainless prop tend to take out propshafts, gearcases, or worse.
I agree with Droopy and RG, at the very least have the prop from your 25 repaired.

Eastcoast thanks for making me feel better about my prop.
Did'nt know that a new prop would be that cheap ($75)
I will start looking on the net to find a replacement.
I guess the only good part of that fishing trip was i caught one nice sz. salmon and caught my limit of dungeness crabs (5).

Re: Damaged Prop

Boattime your right about the low-price props here on i-boats but i'm thinking of waiting till this season is over before buying new so instead of bringing to prop shop i have a bench grinder and did this.
I know its far from being perfect but i think it will hold up for the rest of the season.

btw boattime i was stationed at Subic Bay in the late 70's and some of my navy buddies had a "good time" catching those crabs!! I stayed on the base alot (hehe)

Re: Damaged Prop

I would not go WOT with that prop.
I don't where you live. but I could have that prop repaired within 2 days in MICHIGAN.
the reason not to go WOT is that the RPM's will be High, causing damage to the head. My .02

That would be the least of my worries. If that thing isn't balanced it's going to vibrate, possibly bending the shaft or damaging the bearings in the gear housing.

OP you are wanting to save $75 for now at the risk of having a FAR higher repair bill in the future.

Re: Damaged Prop

I would just get it repaired for $38.00 and keep it as a spare, buy a new one for $75.00......you've spent $113.00 and are still farther ahead than spending several hundred for a new prop shaft, bearings, etc.

Never caught any crabs when I was in Subic. Guess I wasn't doing the right kind of "fishing".

That prop will probably get you through the season, but as said before, you need to be prepared for additional damage to the LU. An unbalanced prop can cause a very ugly repair bill. Regardless of weather you do the repairs or have them done at a shop.
I would take it to a prop shop.

It doesn't look that bad but obviously a new one is better. Make sure you get aluminum in case it happens again. They are more forgiving than steel which gives a little more protection to the OD.
