VP diesel duoprops......

I have sanded, primered and spray enamel painted these darn things and the paint just won't stick!!
First time out......bam.....black Rustoleum paint mostly gone!!

It has to be the prep.....or lack thereof, that is not allowing the paint to stay "stuck"

Any ideas?...

If they're aluminum why fight it with paint? The only way to keep the aluminum coated is to have the prop powder coated or baked on enamel. Otherwise, ordinary spray paint will last only a trip or two at the most before it starts to wear away.

Paint doesn't last on props, even the OEM paint. Especilly the DP's you run em trimmed a little to high and the aluminum goes away too.

though the paint may not last forever you are going about it the wrong way.if the prop is al. you need to use zinc chromate primer first then paint as the paint will not stick to bare al.dupli-color sells a zinc chromate primer in a spray can, works great.it is a self etching primer which means it sticks to al and you need not sand it if you follow the directions.as long as i dont hit sand ive got props that the paint has lasted for years.

paint on an al prop. The oem didn't last past the first time out down here in key west. if you're that concerned just get a stainless that's what i'm doing.

E-coat or powder coat will last a little longer.

Re: damn paint won't stick!!!

I've always just glass beaded the prop clean, washed it up well with a good paint prep solvent, then spray with a good coat of self etching zinc chromate primer, scuff lightly, and complete with several light coats of gloss black or whatever enamel you choose. The edges go first but I usually get half a season before the blades are bare, it all depends on where I'm running. In open water I suppose I'd get a full season or more but sand does a number on paint and props.
