Well the drama goes on. We just had a deer shot in one of the fields. Damn poachers they drive up and down the road with their lights off and use spot lights. This time they shot a baby. We called the sheriff who made a report and said they would make some drive through tonight. I wound up calling a friend who came down and took the deer so it wouldn?t go to waist. It only weighed about 40 lbs.

The game warden called and asked where the deer was shot (he knows the property well, he has staked it out many times) I told him and he is going to be sitting just off the field all night. I hope he gets them if they return to retrieve it.

Re: Damn Poachers

Hate that. Around here the GW's are about useless. But we don't have much of a poaching problem. Sheriff's Dept says our community is the safest and least crime in the county, 'cause everyone knows people around here tend to shoot first, and maybe ask questions later :D

yep... was a problem around this area too. That is untill my neighboor (whom is a taxidermist...and president of some taxidermy club) worked with the DNR to build a 170 class robotic buck. They put it in the field and have an officer staged hidden somewhere, now when the poacher's take a crack at it they are caught.:D

Yes they use mechanical decoys here in VT to help curb the poaching.

Up here they take a different approach to poachers. They figure if they cut back the staff and the budget, the numbers of poachers will go down as well. It works

Poaching is everywhere you go. The SO and game wardens here are serious about it. What we did on our family land was stagger plant 4 rows of pine trees along the fence on the road five years ago. SInce they cant see in to the field because of the trees they cant shoot anything.

Re: Damn Poachers

I talked with the DNR officer this morning he sat up all night long (in the rain i might add) looking over the field. Nobody returned to retrieve the deer. He will be putting out a decoy this week along with a video camera. He is also a part time police officer in our small town so we know him well. He knows about the big buck we have on the property and agrees some body will try a shoot him.

Last night while the sheriff's department was here making there report we had a second truck come down the road real slow. Even though it wasn't the same truck we think it could have been the same people. They do the swap truck and return to the crime to do a drive bye and check if the cost is clear thing here often.

I do not know what the weather/temp is like were you are,
IT HAS BEEN AWHILE, but I know that if I go out hunting and get an animal, deer, elk, moose. The first thing that gets done is the gutting, and removal of the scent glands or the meat goes scanky.

why would someone poach meat just to have it spoil anyways??

But then poaching is not that bright an idea anyways.

They did that around here and caught the same guy twice. Guess he didn't learn the first time. Don't remember what the penalty was.

Keep us posted. I bet they eventually catch the SOB's. For some reason, once deer season starts, it seems the smartest people become idiots. I had 2 fawns left for dead on my property a couple of years ago. Some people when finding out they shot a fawn just leave them so they don't "waste" a tag. I not knowingly shot a fawn once. I registered it. I'm a firm believer in, if you shot it, take it. Waste nothing.

Don't like poachers or deer. Most people I know have hit at least 1 deer so far, i haven't yet knock on wood. Deer are so over populated up here they; scared the crap out of me last month. I look outside and a deer is on my deck. He was curious about my cat

You can help out your local warden, If you choose, without endangering yourself.

If you live there, you know the probable places that the poachers will go. If you have your camera handy, a couple of snapshots will help. You don't even need to have a confrontation. Just pass them on to the warden.

If you are the guy that has a few of those trail camera's, it wouldn't hurt to stash them at hot spots, if you are not currently using them. A photo is a powerful tool for LEO, even if it is inadmissable, it helps them figure who to target in on.

We have so many deer here that you can shoot up to 5 of them, so long as all except one is likely to reproduce. (antlerless) I consider shooting young dumb deer an act of saving someone's grill. Besides, it doesn't take long to cut up a Bambi, and they sure are tasty.

I also salvage quite a few of the car killed deer reported to the gendarmes. Excess venison goes to folks that desperately need the food, nicely cut, wrapped, and frozen.

We have a dirt road that divides our property and they simply drive down the road with spot lights and when they see a deer they shoot. If its on the far end of the property and they have time they retrieve it if not they usually return sometime in the middle of the night. This is usually when they get caught. We have also had them shoot turkey's out of our drive way. Even had them shoot a turkey in grandmothers front yard with her on the front porch yelling at them a few years back. They just told her to shut up or they would shoot her to as they retrieved the bird. People here just have no morals.

Re: Damn Poachers

We have a similar poaching problem here. Except, its mostly on the Reservation, or committed by Rez. locals.
They do what they want when they want, and to heck with the consequences. If they do get caught, they charges are read in and dismissed.

Poachers when caught need to be field dressed where you find them.Even though a land owner doesnt own the animals he still owns the land.
