Damp Ski locker?

Do these things always stay that way? I am out in Wyoming and rain in the summer time is not very common. Always parked with the bow up to drain water out. But it seems if it gets water in there the carpeting the factory put in always stays damp. It has the typical wood floor grate system to get into it.

Make sure the limber hole between the ski locker and the stern is completely clear. Frankly, I wouldn't have carpeting in there for just this reason.

Mine has the carpet removed. I don't know why they ever put it down there.

Boats and moisture are simese-ish. Condensation is one cause and carpets are spongish.

So if that hole is open it should drain just fine and be dry?

I am getting a few soft spots in the floor, so I am looking to redo the whole floor and runners. Mine doesn't like to drain and I am sure the tubing has been smashed due to a previous under water hit from previous owners.

Just wondering if it was carpetless if it would stay dryer and not smell so bad.

If your floor is getting soft, you have rot in there which is keeping the carpet moist. does the carpet dry out if you keep the locker cover off for a day?

With the carpet out it probably won't smell as bad and might have a chance to dry out. Do you anchor alot? Water from the anchor rope when stored will drain through the locker from the bow storage. Pull the carpet and spray the locker and all below deck storage areas with ammonia.

Yes, pull the carpet and replace it with any rubber padding: Seadek, Hydroturf, or cheap and cheerful kitchen cabinet liners. The locker carpet is intended as a sound insulator and padding to protect skiis, paddles, and whatnot from banging around in the locker but is nothing but a mildew sponge. +2 on getting your drains clear.

I do anchor to fish but it is with my trolling motor.

so in a nut shell with a properly working drain system and no carpet the ski lockers will stay dry?

Should, but damp carpet is the least of your worries if you have multiple areas of soft deck.

No. Not if you continue to keep your boat uncovered. But it will have a chance to dry out.

My boat had a carpeted locker and a limber hole that was located a half-inch above the floor... A combination that guaranteed a moldy, stinky locker. Hard to understand how anyone thought that would be a good idea. When I restored my boat, I built up the locker floor with fiberglass so the floor and drain were at the same level. And I did NOT reinstallcarpet!

Pulled out my carpeting when I rebuilt the boat. I just throw a couple heavy duty beach towels down there prior to the skis. It protects them fine, dries the locker, and get removed and washed when the boat is put a way (day trips).

Jopes, sorry if you're already aware, but most ski locker drains are two-way. In one instance, any water taken onboard into the ski locker can drain into the bilge, or same for anchor lockers which may drain and route through the ski locker into the bilge. In the other instance, if there is enough water in the bilge it will can and will flow back into the locker if the boat slows or stops and forward momentum carries the bige water amidships.

Yes I am aware of that.

I was actually planning on foaming up about 80% of the ski locker and the forward portion of it I was going to mount my trolling motor batteries inside of it. Just wanting to utilize the space the best ways possible.

If it were me, I'd stay AWAY from foaming that in... I hate foam, plain and simple. It will eventually get wet, and it will eventually hold water. A nice dry compartment that air can flow through is far, far better.

Even with using foam boards? I have seen pictures online where the center had poured foam down the center.
