OK here's the story.

The forum server is being up-graded so everything was slow this morning. So I figured this would be a good time to check for and install updates from Microsoft Windows.

So I see that I needed a few and downloaded and installed 4 security updates and IE 8.Well after the re-start I had no internet connection.I tried twice to restore (to yesterday and last week) unsuccessfully.

So I think I can fix it under Internet Options but I can't get into that file in regular or safe mode. The downstairs computer I am on now also had no connection but I was able to fix that in Internet Options.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thanx in advance.

My experience with MS updates has been that they are written by scumbag hackers who want to destroy my 'puter.

I do not download updates. . .any updates. . .they are toxic.

Yes the IE 8 was gone on the restore.

What seems odd now is the on-line games - Poker Stars.Full Tilt Poker and Jewel Quest hook up with no problems.

Yes turn off the MS updates. You might have to go back afew more days on your restore to get it back to the way it was. :).

I'm testing IE8 on a station at work. Sometimes it just stops loading pages as if I've lost my Internet connection (though email and Firefox still work). So far rebooting has worked. It's going to take a few patches I'm sure before I release IE8 to any other systems on my network.

I did the IE8 thinking it was a good thing, NOT SO@@ Cost me $65 for a shop to fix it. They got it working , but i am now using FIREFOX.
I have not heard anything good about IE8. I am back with IE7, but like I said, I don't use.

Re: Dang Computer Stuff!!! Help Please!!!!

The two items that are bad are the "Internet Options" on the Control Panel which shows the icon but does not have the title "Internet Options" under it and I cannot access Internet Options.

The other is Internet Access. My home page (Iboats) loads for maybe 2 seconds then disappears.

I have run scans with Super Anti Spyware and Malwarebytes and they show no harmfuls.Windows Defender also shows no harmfuls.

Bummer!!!!!

How is your memory? Do you still have enough to handle the programs that are running. Maybe start getting rid of stuff you no longer use or need.

Well I tried this and that and some others and got nowhere. So I updated my spyware and ran a scan.

The culprit is a new Trojan named Hugipon. 50 items in my Registry now all removed and quarrantined but the damage remains.

I will probably have to take it to the cleaner next week. I just called and he is on vacation.

Thanx All.

Back everything up to an external hard drive (photos, music, documents etc.)and reload windows.

Unless you got a good computer guy that doesn't charge an arm and a leg.

Or, you could go to "spywarewarrior.com" and post there. They will help you with your computer just as the people do here in the repair forums. There are some very knowledable people there....

I am using IE8 and I have not had any problems with it. Sounds to me like either a virus of some sort or a corrupted install.

I have had no trouble at all with IE8. I was having a lot of problems with IE7. That is why I upgraded.

Re: Dang Computer Stuff!!! Help Please!!!!

Curious...were you running Windows XP or Vista? I had catastrophic problems with IE8 in XP, but no problems with IE8 on Vista, even during the Beta phase. Since the official release (post-Beta), I have had no problems on any machines (4 total).

MS updates can be important, I wouldn't discard all of them or block them. There is the option of "express updates" and a different option, which allows you to control which updates are applied from Microsoft. I would recommend using the other option to at least look at which ones are available via auto-update that involve security issues for software that you routinely use while connected to the internet. The other ones that involve Media Player or java (except for security purposes) can be avoided to prevent any problems. Sometimes you just can't get around updates (like java) when using certain websites.

I can't tell you how many times I've wiped a drive because of problems, but this is certainly the best option when there's something that eludes all detection and cleaning. Short of using a RAID system, I think the best way to maintain backups or user files are CD-R's and USB drives. Failure and virus rates on these are far less than hard drive/OS issues. Plus, that makes it easy when I have a virus or trojan that I just can't get rid of.

Just my $.02.

As well you should. Always do the high priority security updates at the very least, you can put off the 'feature' updates (new versions of IE, WMP, etc), but always do the security updates as soon as possible.

They are made and published for a reason (a known bug or exploit has been 'discovered'), and once these updates are publicly available so are the vunerabilities (fun for the bad guys)...
