I just saw on the news.
At about 3am 2 men in a 1 day old $40,000 boat hit a breakwater on lake michigan near the Ill, Ind boarder. I didn't catch what their speed was but they were in a 10 mph zone.

Is this the one your talking about?

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...ts-indiana-breakwall-20110608,0,4918397.story

It wasn't a new boat and it sounds to me like they were very likely drunk considering their actions and the time..

But its a little early to draw any conclusions....

Sounds like you already did.

I didn't see anything regarding alcohol consumption or anything that would lead me to believe that they had been drinking. Could well have been that they thought they were further out than they were. He probably wasn't using the Radar yet. The biggest mistake was probably taking an unfamiliar boat out in the dark. I feel sorry for the guys.

Well with the information from the article:

"The craft was going an estimated 30 to 35 mph in an after-dark 10 mph zone"

And

"The boat's hull broke on the breakwall, which was well-lit"

Just seems that were probably talking about a couple guys that were not fully competent to be driving a boat due to their senses being inhibited by alcohol, I agree that the biggest mistake is taking an unfamiliar boat out at 3 am, but I can't see missing a well lit breakwall I mean that breakwall is taller then the boat by the look of it and if its lit at 3 am that would stick out like a sore thumb, add to that the estimated speed of 30 to 35 mph in a 10 mph zone. Another important note from the article is:

"Citations were likely"

Yeah sounds to me like these guys had a few to many and destroyed a beautiful boat in the carnage.

I used to Rockcrawl Jeeps and one of my favorite sayings is "God forgives, Rocks Don't"

I do hope these guys have a speedy recovery though, Hate to see anyone injured for nearly any reason, Criminals...I don't mind them getting hurt sometimes...:D

That appears to be a radar on the mast, so I reckon there was probably a GPS on board as well. Yeah, I'm thinking this was pretty "avoidable". Like, really, really, really avoidable...even at night and in unfamiliar waters. Sheesh! I mean honestly, if you just dropped $40k on a boat - a 35' boat no less - wouldn't you..... I mean, ahhh! I just can't imagine. I'm at a loss for words.

backwaters where i take my boat often at night once it hits pitch black boats will run every bit of 50+ i wouldnt imagine being on the water while they do that let alone being on the boat, your visual distance is limited to almost nothing and your doing 50+ when i am out at night i let my passengers take a spot light and i drive about 3-5 mph as they scan the water.

Someone wrecked their boat, and totaled it. ................ So What !!!!!!!

Why is it such a big deal when someone wrecks a boat ??? The title makes it sound like a brand new boat set at the dock and sank itself for no reason.
Drunks, druggies, and other morons wreck cars and trucks daily. Why don't we list each one of those separately on this forum? Normal people make a bad judgement call of just make a mistake and have what we call an accident.
Why does it have to be brought up here,on the forum, like i'ts some serious wrong doing and the first time it ever happened?

It involves boats so technically, its a boating topic, I can see the relevancy. Plus it allways sucks to see nice equipment wrecked. However, I can see where Don is coming from too. The boat didnt sink a result of a manufacturing defect, it was totaled in an accident. None of us are immune from becoming the next headline no matter how much more intelligent we think we are. Mistakes happen, even really dumb ones, and we've all made em before.

Word is that one of the men involved in this incident apparently passed away unfortunately, I cannot find anything published though. If this proves true its very unfortunate.

If that is the case, the silence (gag orders) will begin. Lawsuit's abrewin'.

As Don said, I thought the title was going to a relate to a story about a new one sinking at the dock for some unfortunate reason. I also agree that it is a shame when someone gets injured in an accident that may have been completely avoidable, with some due diligence.

All around bad deal.:(

Re: Day old boat sunk

I went looking for a sunken boat for the US Coast Guard a couple of years ago. It had been reported by someone, but they couldn't find it. The funny thing, is that it looks like this one is either the same kind, or very similar. I think I even posted pics of it here, at the time.

What can you say? Stupid is as stupid does.
