Correct me if I'm wrong here but I always thought that deep cycle batteries were meant to be used to run lights/trolling motors/stuff other than starting an engine. My boat came with a deep cycle battery in it as a starting battery. Is there a reason for this? Am I missing something? Why would a person put a deep cycle battery into a runabout that will never have a trolling motor or anything like that on it??

Plates are made different in a deep cycle so they don't suffer as much damage when ran low.... on the flip side, they can't put out quite as much current to start with...

Personally, If it works fine, and starts your boat every time with NO problem, I'd let it be for now and replace when its a few years old instead of spending the $ now....

I've got a deep cycle in my garage I used to jump start my blazer when my alternator was dead... it never blinked.

...just my opinion....

I had one in my van as the battery, period, and no sweat at all ... went under the hood for the 3k oil change and oh yeah, that damnn battery, never did get one ... no indication of boilover or anything, just fine ...

so dont sweat it, as long as it cranks the motor over, its fine .... remember, a big part of Keep It Simple Sailor is if it aint broke, DONT FIX IT!

OK thanks. I wasn't planning on replacing it until it needs it. Was just wondering why someone would put a DC battery in the thing to start with. It cranks over and starts fine so I'll just not worry about it I guess. :)
