Hello, ran Sea-Foam in my mix last year and de-carboned the motor at the end of season. Looking in the plug holes I can see small bits of brownish flakes, I assume loosened carbon deposits. Do I need to pull the head and clean them out ? Is it anything to worry about ? Does the head gasket need replace if I remove the head, it was new last year. The motor is a '56 Eveinrude Lightwin 3hp. -Thanks

Re: De-carbon question ?

I wouldn't worry too much, it is probably just carbon and it will blow through the engine as soon as you start it, I owud think scraping the top of the piston would be alot worse for it, you woud sure get gunk stuck in the cylinder, I think I woud let this one go if it were my engine.

Re: De-carbon question ?

All the flakes are loose and will stick to a q-tip when swabed across the piston. Other than that the pistion tops and cyclinder walls are clean and shiny , no build up on top. In fact when I replaced the head gasket last year I was surprised how clean and carbon free the pistons , head, and walls were; looks like very low hours on this 55 year old motor.
