My new lettering has arrived, time to rename the Grady. Unfortunately, after I got the old name off last month, I used Meguiars #44 on there. Any tips on the unwaxing? To prep for the best vinyl adhesion? Thanks so much.......

Happy boating! ;)

Go to an automotive paint supplier and get some wax and grease remover. It's a thin (like water) solvent that won;t hurt the finsh. NAPA may also carry it. I know 3M makes it, but it is expensive. I've always used generic brands and they work fine.

After wiping down the surface with wax & grease remover, I have always wiped it down again with water, let dry, and then applied my decals. After that, wax the area, including over the letters.

Thanks for the quick reply sangerwaker.

L.I. Chuck, I have acetone on the boat already, so this would be the cheaper alternative. Acetone won't hurt anything?

Thanks guys

hey luna- can't comment on what you should do, but...

went downtown annapolis last night and docked at the city docks. was in front of a large boat (didn't catch what it was), but the name caught my eye- loona sea. thought of you.

i also happened to be docked right next to a 1993 sailfin. great condition, made mine look a bit dirty. i have some work to do.

was really cool having two older grady's sitting there together. had a few guys walking by stop and chat. said i had a great boat, and were very surprised at the price i paid. made me feel good.

That's why I mentioned acetone. As long as you don't flood the area and let it soak it's ok, I know it's a vertical surface. Apply to a cloth and wipe the area for the lettering. The acetone will evaporate before softening the gel coat.

More important than the cleaning, I hope you followed the correct procedure for renaming your boat? You don't want to anger Poseidon!!!!
I saw a thread on here for the correct procedure

Thanks Chuck!

Matt, Luna Sea was the Lund, and Dog's named Luna.

Renaming the Wahoo (aka "Figment"-previous owner was a shrink) to WAHOO, decals are in. Will be posting pics soon. Did you follow your old thread to that Grady site? Send em your pics, my Grady made their "Gallery"!
:D :D :D

Yeah, people will stop at these fine boats, and only positive things are said, usually. Remember last summer when a guy drove by in a POS and I heard him say to his bud "That's my dream boat right there". Words I have not forgotten...... :)

Luna Sea - Before you go using chemicals, try Dawn dishwashing detergent, it'll take the wax off. A detailer told me about this to remove old wax from my car before applying a fresh coat of wax.

I agree with AGS, A good friend has an auto detailing shop, he said the same thing.
Dawn with a towel removes all wax and residue, and easy on the finish.
