My 98 Toyota Rav 4 stranded me this morning. I put a volt meter on the battery and it read 12.67. Isn't that enough to start a car??? <br />Also, this thing has an aftermarket alarm and keyless entry system on it. When all this began this morning the alarm sounded and I could not get it shut off. Anybody ever experience trouble with these alarms???

Re: Dead battery???

I disconnected the battery cables to clean them (they were not bad at all) and decided to charge the battery while doing so. Later, when I tried to hook up the cables and start car the alarm went off again??? I finally disconnecetd the alarm and am trying to charge again... not sure if battery croaked or what happened.

Yes your have enough voltage, its the cranking amps that do the cranking though. I would back up along the battery cable and try and see if you can detect where the vehicle gets its power for the rest of the vehicle. Lights etc. May be some corrosion there. Its common for alarms to go off if they detect low voltage.

the alarm I had would see changes in the state of the battery and go off, when it started it the s10 would still start, but three months later the battery failed, completely.
