I have a 95 Johnson 9.9 4 stroke that I use for backup power on my 22' cuddy. It was never a good starter. Last fall it would not start at all. NO SPARK! I believe it is a coil problem as I removed the coil and tested it with an ohm meter. No resistance between input side and output side. This coil (omc 584451) is no longer available and there does not seem to be an aftermarket coil available. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Troubleshoot the system following the CDI OB Ignition Troubleshooting Guide, free download from

www.rapiar.com

Directions to bench test the coil are also included.

Check their inventory/parts catalog to see if they make a comparable coil, if needed.

Re: Dead Johnson 9.9 4 stroke

Thanks CharlieB!
Found the website. "Rapair" not rapiar. Discovered that these solid state coils cannot be tested with an ohm meter. Our "old time" OMC dealer, who still tracks his inventory with the big steel bins full of paper inventory cards, found that he had a coil. Put it all back together and Bingo...runs like new. Still not sure what can be done about future problems as these coils are no longer available and there are no aftermarket units that I can find. Strange, considering that this unit is not all that old. Thanks again!

Re: Dead Johnson 9.9 4 stroke

These are kind of "orphan engines". They were only made from 95-98, so they don't share alot of parts with other models. Hopefully your replacement coil module lasts you another 10 years, since it probably isn't attractive enough for 3rd party suppliers to make a "specialty" coil. Kind of sucks that BRP won't support a barely 10 year old engine.....
