I have a 2001 Glastron GX185SF with a Volvo Penta 4.3GL PEFS. After taking it out of storage and doing many test there is an electrical issue. I finally resorting to calling a Volvo Penta dealer to schedule service. Dealt with a very nice Service person. Walked him through everything I have done and currently still have for issues.

Current Issue-
Motor will start and running as long as key is fully engaged. Release the key and motor dies. Fuel pump works and test as it should. All cylinders fire correctly.

Suggested Fix
Volvo Penta dealer said the dead man switch is bad. He is trying to locate the correct one for me(talk to him 30 minutes before closing yesterday). I asked him if doing a bypass will help to diagnose if this is bad. He said there should be a resistor or capacitor in the switch. Thus meaning you can not bypass it. Is this the case? Any suggestion on where to get one quickly? Do universal ones from Cabelas work?

Thank you for your help.

Something is not right with the diagnosis of the dealer....as in he is blowing smoke...

Does it run for about 30 seconds or die immediatly?

If it dies immediatly, you key switch would be the first thing i would check

If it runs for 30 seconds or so, folloe the fuel pump relay wiring. Either a bad relay, or bad oil pressure switch or no oil pressure

Typcially it it run for about 30 seconds as long as I hold the key. I replaced the ignition first thing as all research said this was the cause.

I have checked all fuel and relays per VP service manuals. All test were with in VP requirements.

I have not check oil pressure switch. I will check both the oil pressure and check recheck the fuel pressure relay.

Also does the dead man switch have a capacitor or resistor that makes it impossible to bypass? Lastly I did OHM test the wire from coil to cap and one is good and the pink wire with something part of it is 9.5.

Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your suggestions. After getting a new ignition kill switch, discovered as you mentioned that likely wasn't the issue.

I decided to take it to a Volvo Penta Marina as summer is too short. Dropped it off yesterday and got the call today its running. He found a partially separated wire harness. He said the plug had a cracked clip and they clamped it together and got it running. Now having him doing a tune up and oil change.
