Dead Miss....

Ok...This is the preliminary brain storming session.

Here is the history...I bought a boat from my wife's boss for a good price that had a 40hp evinrude on the back. He told me when I bought it that the motor was "basically junk". That being said, I confirmed the story and replaced the powerhead and resealed the lower unit added power tilt and voila! We're back in business.

Here is the issue...I took it out today for it's "inaugural" run following the break in information I got from SELOC Online. Let it idle for 5 minutes, 1500 or less for the first 20 min, then 3500 or less for another 20, etc. It is mixed at 25 to 1 for the break in. The first 20 minutes at 1500 or less went great....boat rode nice and seemed to be running good. When I gave it some throttle to get up to 3500 it started to miss...Brought the throttle back and it continued to have a dead miss. I thought I might have fouled a plug so I went back to shore (I was near the boat ramp) and pulled the plugs....The bottom cylinder looked perfect, the top one was washed down and clean on half, but the other half mirrored the bottom cylinder, a nice light brown color. Put the new plugs in and pushed off. Started it up and went to take off and it still had the dead miss. On my way back to the ramp I pushed in the choke solenoid and it tried to pick up the missing cylinder momentarily. Did this repeatedly with the same results. I have not had much time to mess with it since I got home, but did do a quick compression check to make sure that nothing was actually "damaged" and it checks good 120-125 on both cylinders.

I plan on double checking the coil/spark, but it appears to be running lean. Anyone have any ideas on where to start? If not, it looks like I will be tearing apart the carb and looking for any sediment or contamination and then probably on to the gas tank. Is it possible to have the bottom cylinder run perfect and the top be lean for any other reason than the carburetor? Thanks for any help you guys can offer. I'm not real sure where to start so I was just wondering if there were any common problems to look for. Thanks again.

No common problems? Allright, well...regardless of what the problem is, I was thinking about it today at work and realized I have no filter in my fuel system other than the screen in my fuel pump. Is there any reason I can't put on inline as long as it is the right inlet/outlet diameter to match the line?

"the top one was washed down and clean on half, but the other half mirrored the bottom cylinder"

Sure sounds like a bad head gasket.

Any way for a bad head gasket to still show good compression? I just got done checking for spark and cleaning the carb. Getting ready to install an inline fuel filter and we'll fire it up and see what happens.

Hrm . . . not likely. Let me change that to an exhaust gasket. Something is steam-cleaning that plug.

Re: Dead Miss....

As in clean...It was cleaning off the nice brown color that the spark plug was getting. I even swapped the plugs between the cylinders and got the same results.

When I cleaned the carbs I cleaned EVERYTHING that I could get to. I just didn't remove the lead plug on top, but used carb cleaner and compressed air to spray them out.

Anyway, the problem appears to be solved. After a bunch of looking and testing and going from fuel to spark, I believe I was having a ground issue with the coil despite that when tested I was getting good spark. And now that it has been corrected it actually runs better now than before. It purrs like a kitten! Hopefully that will be the end of it. Thanks again.
