Dead no ignition

Hello All, Took her out today, Pine Flat Lake, CA. Put her in the water but no start dead!. It's a Bayliner 1997 Mercury 90 HP outboard I removed the cover and discovered that by wiggling the wires and the key in the ON position it buzzed and then turned the key to start and it did.

We get underway and could hear the buzzer for a "split" second, no effect on the engine. We stop turn the engine off and I try to start again but no go DEAD. I remove the cover again and wiggle the wire area and the buzzer comes on for a second, like it's always done before and starts up. It did this several times during our ride.

If anyone has had this problem please let me know what you found to repair it.
Gracias, Ed

Re: Dead no ignition

One at a time remove a wire inspect it clean it and replace. Do all the wires and connectors in starter solenoid area. The area you have pictured. Be sure to unhook or turn off the battery first.

Re: Dead no ignition

I'm assuming this motor has a remote harness running to the helm where the key switch and guages are?

I had a very similar issue with mine recently. I found the problem in bad connections where the remote harness plugged into the motor harness under the cowl. I had the same issues where I could wiggle wires and sometimes it would start.

If your engine has the same type of harness as mine then I would suggest putting on your list to check the connections in the connector between those two harnesses. If you search my username you should find my thread from when I had this problem.

Hope this helps.

Well I unplugged and replugged all the bullet connectors, all seam to be making a good connection.

I tugged and pushed on the wires but it worked fine I could not get it to NOT work, she started every time.

I did check the wire harness and spread the pins a little to ensure connections. I guess I'll have to wait and see what she dose in the water.

Re: Dead no ignition

sounds like a solenoid needs to be replaced. I think 20 bucks will fix the problem.

Why isn't that block painted black? Looks like a Force, if so it really should be posted in the Force/Chrysler forum

Force/Chrysler? So far the parts I've ordered for this 1997 Mercury 90HP work just fine:

Real easy to check...jump the starter post with the battery post...I have had two go out on me in the last year...I alway have a few tools with me so that I can jump the relay should it go bad on the water...should be your problem...Your Tracker motor is a Mercury..Be glad it is not a "Force".....
