Dealing with a heat wave...

Based on some of the posts from back east and around the great lakes area it seems its been a weird year for weather for everyone. Normally up here in the PNW (Pacific Northwest) were not known to be a hot spot. This year tho'....whew, I can't remember the last time it rained and we are just cooling down from a bunch of very hot days around here. Its been nothing but sun it seems since early-mid june.
We hit over 30?C+ (90?F) for several days which is hot around here. Normally we are in the mid 20's which is a nice 75?F.
Regardless, the local lakes are just frikkin' beautiful for swimming probably 75?-80?F.
At any rate this going to continue well into next week so it looks like its 'lake and boat' time!!!
On the downside the province (BC) has a very, very serious full forest fire warning. A lot of this province is burning up right now and we've had to 'import' firefighters from other parts of Canada and even Australia.
Any campfire in the province (and its a big province) is prohibited and carries a $350-$500 immediate fine. They said that there are now about 150-175 new fires that have started within the last few days..many from lightning strikes.
Hopefully...and its weird to say this...we are going to get a good 2-3 days of straight rain soon, particularly in the interior.
Anyways...here is quick pic of how we are dealing with it!!
Cheers!..and hopefully the weather will pick up for you guys who have been getting your share of rain, cool and cloud this season!
BP:)

I'm hearin' ya man! This heat is just brutal! And with the humidity here on the coast it's even worse. As soon as you step outside you're soaked in sweat and it doesn't want to evaporate. The first stop for me after work is one of our local lakes for a swim to cool down. We've taken the boat out several times in the evenings and tied up to a snag on the shady side of a bay to have dinner and float in the blessedly cool water. Here's a view of Powell Lake where we usually go:

Re: Dealing with a heat wave...

It has been unseasonably cold here this summer.
July's average temp was 69.something, it does stay warmer later into fall here now~em~days, thats kinda nice.
Many folks here love these cool temps, I can stand some heat.

Re: Dealing with a heat wave...

We have had a stretch of 9 days when it was over 100F. Not too unusual for TX, but we have also had days when it actually rained and the highs were in the upper 80s. Now that is unusual.

Dealing with very hot weather:
*Avoid, at all costs, dehydration. Drink water, not booze.
*Wear a floppy hat that you can wet regularly.
*Same with a T shirt if you are really into relief.
*Stay out of direct sun.

OR. . . . .

Turn on the AC and stay indoors. :)

Sorry to hear you folks are havin a hot go of it.
Been very cool here for about two years!
Have only been in the pool once this summer and hardly at all last year due to temps.
If it's any consolation, from those two pics you folks live in Gods country!

This is how we dealt with it at Horsefly Lake (Cariboo region of BC) last week. Beautiful, beautiful sunny days, warm evenings. Couldn't have asked for more.

Looking at the last pic Posted, I'm pretty happy to be a new boat owner, in Western Canada. Now if I could only get the damn thing to float!

Wow! Nice pics!

Is that Shawnigan Lake BP?

Up here in Haida Gwaii we're still allowed small campfires but we also are having warmer than average weather (low 20's) and we haven't had rain for a few weeks.

We have an above ground pool that came with the house we bought and haven't used it too much the last two summers but we sure are this year! Our 3 y.o. loves it!

I start 4 weeks off on Tuesday and am looking forward to taking full advantage of the sunshine.

Re: Dealing with a heat wave...

Coldest July in Peoria, IL... EVER! We set record lows for the high temperature (hard to type that it a way that makes sense) on July 1 (68), July 18 (71), and August 1 (69). My son wore his long pant PJs to bed last night, but without socks. His feet were very, very cold this morning. It's been in the upper 50s on most nights. On the plus side, I have only run my air conditioner for 1 solid week this year, and for a few days here and there, just a few times. Loving the lower energy bills!
Also just about the wettest spring ever in Peoria. The ground is still saturated with water, as every time it rains, the farm fields have puddles. Watch closely, I think soybean yields are going to be bad. Maybe the corn too. That means prices are going to rise at the grocery store, again!

Re: Dealing with a heat wave...

Normally down here we're in the middle of a heat wave, however, this summer has been nothing but RAIN RAIN RAIN. Not the kind mid afternoon shower either. I'm talking about NON STOP 24/7 rain storms. We're just now getting break, and hopefully it stays that way. I was thinking yesterday, because it rained all day, that if it continued I could just take my boat to work.

Man those lakes are beautiful!
We have been in our normal temps with below average rain..
Just mid 90's with high humidity...normal weather for the southeast US this time of year.
I am already looking forward to fall...thats the good boating weather.

Well atleast I know where the sun went. Over here in New England It was warm last week mid 80's But, we are still having this friggin' rain. Last 4 years its been so darn wet I think I've got gills growing behind my ears.
It's good to know someone is enjoying it though.

Re: Dealing with a heat wave...

Yeah, we've got to take and grab any stretch of weather like this we can get. Being a rainforest area we can have pretty wet, gloomy winters (normally not too cold tho') so I am absorbing and enjoying as much of these rays as I can.;)
BP:)
Actually...its kind of nice to need air conditioning for a change. I was a bit more used to that living back east in southern Ontario:D
ps: Mike R. you are right on the money...that is Shawnigan lake.

Hey BP, the legs on the left are MUCH better looking than the ones on the right! :p

Yep, weather hasn't been all that warm here in central PA ... upper 70's today. Been a COOL summer in these parts.
