At work to day we all got sent home early due to a job sight death. I don't know the details and really don't want to know. The deal is when a 10ton tree takes you out its never good. The risk of a hand faller is one of the riskiest jobs out there and when things go wrong they really go wrong. I also some times subjected to similar risks as with any job I guess. So when you are watching the Axmen on Tv (One of the companies on the show is one I work for) and seeing the dumb and risky setups that don't even come close to what really goes on in the bush, come back to reality.

Just getting my thoughts out there thank you.

That is never good when someone on the job dies.
If I remember correct, fallers have the highest WCB rate of any worker.

Pulled a turn once and it hooked a stump. It swung around and felled a saplin that fell me. Went chasin after that. A death closes down the whole side. Sorry to hear. Widowmakers, schoolmarms, all bad news

My SIL is a 'jack. I worry about him and pray for him every day! Dangerous business ... the family and friends of the person involved are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry to hear of the tragic loss of one of God's children. PJ, I understand if you're not comfy telling us which outfit you're with. However, if you are, I'd love to know.

It sounds like the guys father was teaching the son the family business and was right there when it happened. Just a sad day

I hear you, it still gets to me as well when we have an injury and/or fatality...always they are preventable.....stinks when you know them and even worse when the operator knows them, and they both could have avoided the whole situation...no "do overs" in that situation...

I saw a few deaths when I worked the gas rigs, it never got easier. It makes it more difficult when you're far off the beaten path and don't know the area too well, and try to get rescue there...We had a kid die because we were 400 miles from home, and didn't know the local road names.

When I got hurt bad out there(everybody does at some point), I picked my teeth up, wrapped my shirt around the 6" gash on my head, and drove myself out to the first house I saw, and told them to call for help since I didn't know the area.

Looks like we all get to go to a safety meeting tomorrow and find out what happened. I just hate these things even though I really didn't know the guy.

The company needs to get a handle on it before another bad incident happens. These things always seem to happen in threes.

We did not go in today but had a company safety meeting. It went well and found out how it happened. It turned out that what he was doing to protect him self was what got him.

The town has been very supportive of the family and they will be well looked after with the companies insurance and community has started a trust fund for them to get bye on on till they get back up on there feet.

Time heals

I've dodged a few maple top jarts, been pinned under a few tops, sawed slots in my legs, and otherwise been hurt in the woods but not seriously, not necessarily because I'm good, just lucky. Secret is I try to learn from others mistakes. What did he do that got him?

As the first tree started to fall it snagged the tree he got behind to be in safe ground. If your familiar with old growth cedar, the tree may look strong but the center may be rotten. As his safety tree exploded and barber chaired on top of him.
