hi,
I have a 96 135 hp 2-stroke merc with a glass fuel filter under the hood, there is also an in-line water separator installed. There is a brown sand like debris on the bottom and in the screen. This was found after it had been sitting for 4 months and had not been winterized. In the past i have had pieces of the inside coating from the line that goes from the tank outlet to the motor but it was clear and flakey. This does not seem to be that. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be?

Sand is the first thing to come to mind. If you aren't exposed to that then more fuel line dissolving. The color is right for the gray Quicksilver OEM hose, but mine like yours came through in semi-circular chunks of the color in your fuel filter.

Look in the bottom of your tank. If it is pristeen clean, then expect fuel line degredation. Like it has to come from somewhere, if not from the tank then the supply line.

Do you have a steel fuel tank? If so, it could be rust.

If you pre-mix, there is a good chance that it’s old oil/water/stabilizer from the bottom of your tank. Never should have made it to that filter unless your separator is getting close to full or you used an inferior filter.

While your at it, get rid of the in-line filter and install a good 10 um filter/ seperator with a drain. Then get rid of a grey fuel hose. That stuff is famous for it's poor quality
