I am trying to remove the pinstripes and decals from my 86 sylvan v171. they are old, cracked, faded and they fall apart when i try to peel them. I tried with a plastic scaper and a heat gun but due to the cracks, it seemed excessively tedious

I have heard of an pinstripe eraser (???) that you put in you drill and it rubs them off, ...

also, what is the best method/product to remove the old adhesive left behind?

Thanks guys
Mike

Do a search and you will find the answer you request.
You can also get a hairdryer or better yet a heat gun and get that pinstriping off. Point the hardryer at the decal till its warm then pull it off a bit. Then point the gun where the pinstripes touches the boat and where it is still attached. Keep pulling and it will come off. To get the residue off Actone works fairly well but Goof-off works better.

pinstripe eraser

turns out i had been misspelling pinstripe when i was typing it in.

Any expericence with it? ... says it won't damage auto paint, so i assume it won't damage gel coat.... ?

Those erasers like that work great if you have a high speed tool to turn them. A regular drill isn't really fast enough. An air die-grinder works much better.

There's glue/adhesive remover. I've used it for some purpose other than marine, and I don't recall what, but I do remember being quite amazed at how well it worked without being too corosive.
You could also check out Acetone, however if you do use one of the more aggresive solvents be sure to check it out with a small amount in an obscure location.

Whoa there! Those wheels work very well on some surfaces and chew up the finish on others. It is worth a try because if it works, it works excellently. Just be sure to try it out in an inconspicous place.

I've never had mine so much as leave the tiniest mark on any finish I've used it on.

If its not too late,Try Interlux 299E works good on stripes but keep it off of painted surfaces. It works on both,I have used it to remove old names on the transome when the decals or stripes are old and cracked.

The instructions specify that it will burn certain finishes. And I have verified it.

I just re did my boat name and graphic decals. I used a hairdryer and a chiseler (sp) I got the chisler from here: http://www.streetglo.net/boat-names.html It's a plasting thing that looks like a a bar of soap once it gets so thin you can't hardly pick it up. I don't know what it's made of, but it's extremely hard plastic, almost like a razor but harder maybe. You can scrape with it and use a hair dryer. It comes right off. I ended up using two of them by the time I was done, but not a single mark on my fiberglass. I started with a puddy knife but it would occassionally shave off the gel coat at times. Try the chiseler. It's around 2-3 dollars, I don't remember.
