I have a 1997 Evinrude 225 Ocean Pro. I want to perform a decarb but have questions after I have searched for decarb under FAQ's and Johnson/Evinrude Repar forums.

1. How many cans should I expect to use? I saw on another site, boatsetup.com where it says one can of OMC engine tuner per cylinder.

2. Where should I spray it...into the carb throats or into the primer solenoid fitting? I just bought a can of Johnson/Evinrude Engine Tuner and doesn't have a fitting on it for a valve, looks just like an aerosol spray nozzle with a small plastic tube attached.

3. How long should I let the engine tuner set? Some responses say overnight, some say never more than 4 hours? I bought my boat used and I don't know if it was ever decarbed.

4. Will I have to change the sparkplugs after the decarb is done?

Thanks for all the help this site provides.

The Big O

Re: Decarb Questions

1. One per cylinder.

2. You can do it either way. Throough the solonoid is a lot less messy. Get the adapter.

3. Overnight.

4. I would.

Re: Decarb Questions

Sorry for the tardy thank you. My family took a vacation on the boat for 5 days so I'm just getting back to the site. Thank you for your advice. I'll follow it.

Re: Decarb Questions

Stupid question. I have a 1997 Johnson Ocean Runner (V6 175 HP). Does my carb setup have six throats?

Don't hijack Big O's thread, Peter. Start a new topic.

Re: Decarb Questions

Here are the instructions on the OMC engine tuner can.

Run engine up to normal operating temperature.
Stop engine and remove primer lever end cap and firmly attach hose connector supplied with can.Leave lever in the run position.Running engine at idle speed inject one 2 second burst for each cylinder waiting two seconds between bursts. Then inject a final burst of 20 seconds or until engine stalls, whichever happens first and immediately turn engine off.Remove hose and replace cap.Let engine set out of use between 3 to 16 hours and follow by running at fast idle for 15 minutes to clear any carbon residue.

A good water run is also beneficial in discharging any dislodged carbon from the treatment.Changing sparkplugs or cleaning and regapping is also recommended following this procedure.IMO one can per cylinder is major overkill and I can't imagine how long it would take between stalls to get that much through the primer solenoid fitting. In any case ,good luck.
