Decarbed my truck

With all the talk lately about decarbing different vehicles, I had some time today so this is what I did.

1993 Ford Ranger 5sp, 4 ltr with 193,000 miles give or take. I bought it with 98,000.

Has always had a rough Idle and pinged badly going up hills so I had to shift down to stop it but ran very well and used very little oil.

I did it through the power brake booster hose.

I increased the Idle and slowly poured about two pints of water in the hose using a small funnel. Then when that was done I poured about 3/4 of a can of real Seafom through it and shut it off. After about an hour I had an errand to do and it smoked out the neighborhood there and most of the way back. Got lot's of attention. :)

Surprise surprise, it now Idles smoothly and gets 50 MPG . Not really, but the Idle is very noticeably smoother. I'll run the cr*p out of it on the way home tonight.

The pinging your hearing could be a sign that the EGR valve isn't working, timming could be off, or the knock sensor not working. Is the "check engine light on?

That pinging is detonation and that is not a friend of pistons. It can come from carbon build up, timing issues, raised compression (at 98K, I doubt it). Whatever the reason, as the pinging continues the motor will eat the pistons - reman $2600.

When i worked for Dodge we use to decarb before each tune up.It worked verry well on the 2.2 and 2.5.The only thing is every now and then we would make a car start burning oil.

No check engine light, and no codes.

Pinging is much better, it will only do it if I lug it in fifth. It's running a lot smoother.

Try some mid- or high grade gasoline. If the pinging stops, you will have to re-tune the engine for it to run on 87 octane or pay the price for a fuel with a higher flash point. Or lunch the motor, in time. The basic difference in gasoline grades is how much toluene is added to raise the flash point.
