I just ordered the fuel pump diaphram and gaskets for my 1988 85 hp Force. I also plan on doing a decarb using SeaFoam as directed on another post. My question is, should I decarb first and then replace the fuel pump or the other way around? On the fuel pump, I plan on replacing all gaskets and check valves.

Same question on spark plugs, as I will be replacing them also?

Before/after=no biggie. Clean plugs after decarb.

One other item.... I am also planning on replacing the fuel lines. I use the portable 6 gal tanks and the primer bulb is located on the fuel line close to the tank. Is there anything wrong with putting the primer bulb in the splashwell area. In effect, I would just have a longer line that runs to the tank and a shorter line to the engine.

Can I also switch the fuel coupling on the tanks? It has the coupling that is used on air compressors. It seems to want to leak and drip gas. Is there a coupling that is tighter?

Mine if not most primer bulbs are in the splashwell (asthetics and convience). Got any kind of clamp on the connection? S/S screw clamps work pretty well.

Re: Decarbing 1988 85 hp and fuel pump

Just finished the decarb and replacing the fuel pump. Compression in all 3 cyls was between 120 and 125. I think that's good???

Check valves were a PITA to get the one out. I hope I didn't score the inside of the valve seat too much in getting it out. Replaced the valves, gasgets, fuel screen etc.

Decarbed by sprying SeaFoam DeepCreep into the carbs, then removed plugs and sprayed inside cylinders. Let soak for about 1 hour and started her up. Plenty of white smoke and black water. Repeated the process.

Compression after the decarb was basically the same. I don't know if that is good or bad.

Put in new plugs.

Now I noticed a new problem with a water leaking on the other side of the engine. I will create a new post for that.

Had seepage out a couple of bolts. Removed and replaced with a slathering of antiseize on them. Worked.
