I have read on here a lot of people advising on decarbing but I do not quite understand what that is or how to go about doing it. My motor is a 75 Johnson 135 horse if it is motor specific. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Re: "decarbing"?

Decarbing is the removal of carbon on the cylinder heads, pistons, exhaust ports and exhaust system, loosens and cleans stuck piston rings. Removes varnish inside the crankcase, crankshaft, rods and bearings.

I use Marine De-Carb by ValvTect it's basically engine overhaul in a can. Instructions how to use is on the can, basically spray it into the carburetor while keeping the engine running at a high idle . ;)

Some people use Seafoam as well.

Seafoam....bad name for a good product. Has many uses from using it strait to clean and in mix to maintain good performance.

Seafoam is a very good product, as is OMC Engine Tuner.

The FAQs has a thread on this

I'm still the OMC Engine Tuner fan. Had real good luck with it over the yrs.

Re: "decarbing"?

I finished my decarb today with running at wot after all above suggestions but with seafoam. Doesnt make as much smoke as I anticipated but after it cleared out my 88spl sounded better and ran about 100 prms faster and 2 knots
Hope you have same success

Re: "decarbing"?

Thanks for that. I'm on a bit of a forced hiatus from working on the boat right now, trying to get healthy again but when I get back to it I'm going to try the decarbing.
